Quinton Chievous, the Chicago native graduate who transferred from the University of Tennessee, earned his communications degree in three years. He is the son of a scoring legend at the University of Missouri, so the basketball genes run heavy in the family. Derrick Chievous, who was a first-round draft pick (16th) in 1988 by the Houston Rockets, is the all-time scoring leader at Missouri. Quinton looks to rebound after a storytelling season last year.
Chievous helped guide the Hampton Pirates to clinch a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship this past season after only having a record of 16-17. This prompted the Pirates to advance to the NCAA Tourney for the first time since 2011, when they lost to the #1 seed Duke in the round of 64.
Hampton defeated the Manhattan Jaspers, 74-64, in the First Four matchup in the Round of 68. Chievous had 15 points and 13 rebounds in the qualifier of automatic bids, which were improvements of his regular season averages of only 10.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
In the second preliminary matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats, Chievous had his second consecutive double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds in the second round of the NCAA Tourney. He outscored the perennial 2015 number one draft pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Karl Anthony-Towns, in their defeat against the Wildcats 79-56.
The Hampton Pirates are projected to finish second in the MEAC for this 2015-16 year behind the regular season champions, North Carolina Central.
According to Hampton's basketball head coach, Edward Joyner said, "We think with the addition of Quinton, you can never promise a championship, but we feel like we're right up there." "We know we're ready to compete for it, and hopefully he can help take us over the top."
In just his first game this season on the road against Winthrop on Nov. 14, Chievous racked up 29 points and snagged 23 rebounds in an unfathomable shootout. Despite the loss, 102-95, to a non-conference opponent like the Eagles of Winthrop, Chievous' monster performance looks truly promising for this year. Expect Quinton Chieovus to continue rewriting history as he is slated to bolster his chances of making his dream of playing in the NBA a reality.
