For the second year in a row, Auburn has replaced its defensive coordinator. With Will Muschamp heading to South Carolina to be the head coach, Auburn hired Kevin Steele away from LSU. Lets take a look at his defensive philosophy.
Kevin Steele’s defensive philosophy will look pretty familiar. He runs a “multiple scheme,” meaning he will run a little 4-3, a little 4-2-5, and maybe even stand up some ends and linebackers for a 3-4 look.
Against spread teams that may look to throw the ball around like yard, like Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Texas A&M, he will primarily use two linebackers and bring in a hybrid linebacker/safety. Used against power running teams like Alabama, LSU, Arkansas and Georgia, Steele will look to use the likes of Carl Lawson, Montravious Adams, Bryon Cowart and others to stop the run.
In the secondary, look for man coverage on the outside, with Auburn's young and talented Carlton Davis and company, with a good amount of cover to help over the top by the safeties.
After Steele is announced, we will know a lot more about what kind of defensive strategy he will employ, but everything seems to point to this “multiple scheme” as the one he’s going to go with.
War Eagle, y’all!
