Dating an athlete is just more than cute pictures and clever sports related captions. Whether your significant other is shooting 3's, hitting home runs, scoring goals or doing standing tucks; we all know the amount of work that goes into a relationship with an athlete.
Support is key. Although we may post a picture a couple of times of coming out to their games or competitions. We are really at every game even the away ones (if it isn't too far away). You probably find us yelling the loudest, clapping the loudest and sometimes yelling at the ref (oops). We are probably one of their biggest fans.
Off-Season doesn't mean off-season. Sometimes we almost look forward to the last game of the season. Then we realize it isn't really over after their last games. There is still workouts and preparations to be done for the next season.
They loved the sport first. There are days where there might be four or more hour longer practices. There are sometimes some weekends where your significant other is gone for a whole weekend. Even worse there are sometimes when they are gone on anniversary or birthday. This can be tough and frustrating but you have to understand they loved the sport before they loved you.
You are their motivator. After a long practice, they are usually drained. It's really easy for them not to type the paper due at 11:59 or project. That's where you come in, you have to push them not only to do great in their sport but also in school.
A bad practice doesn't mean a bad day. Bad practices are always the worst. Whether their coach yelled at them the whole time, team drama or just an off day; it's always hard to leave it practice. This can change their whole mood. We learn not to take it personally, but rather cheer them up. We have to remind them a bad practice doesn't mean it's a bad day.
There are so many aspects to make our relationship work. There is endless amount of effort and time put forth. We are there number one fans and we won't ever let them forget.
