An Open Letter To My Dad

To The Moon And Back

An Open Letter To My Dad
Birdville ISD

I want to start out by thanking you for everything. You have been there since day one. I can remember you saying, “You’re my sweet girl.” I never wondered whether it is the truth or not. From the moments you taught me how to play t-ball to the times you (still) take me fishing - I will forever be your sweet girl.

I remember as a young girl we had our daily prayers on the way to school, and occasional jam sessions to The Bee Gees, James Brown, and Michael Jackson (you have always had the best taste in music). I always wanted to be like you - my world revolved around being like dad. The way you walked, the way you talked, the way you laughed, and the way you loved; I have always looked to you as my role model and best friend. There is no one in the world that I would rather have as my role model. The way you love as Christ loves and the way you forgive so easily - that is the personality I strive to obtain. I have yet to stop looking to you as my role model; and I know no one is perfect, but in my eyes you come pretty close.

So Daddy,

No matter the boys that walk in, and sometimes out, you will always be my number one. You will always be the man I admire most; the one who I know always has a shoulder to cry on and a heart to smile with. Thank you for all of the times you loved me when I was the least lovable. Thank you for leading our family towards unconditional love and constant support. Thank you for loving mom the way I hope to be loved one day. And thank you, most of all, for loving me to the moon and back. I will always be your little girl, no matter how old I get.

-Your Princess

PS - I will always enjoy fishing with you way more than any other boy out there.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
