In the past 8 years, Michelle Obama has proven her abilities, grace, class and dignity to America. Now, I may be a little biased because I’m probably one of her biggest fans, and I’m a millennial, but she may be one of the best First Ladies this country has seen in a long time. After watching the Democratic National Convention this past July, I thought no speech of her’s could top the one she gave on the first night. However, on Oct. 13, Michelle Obama gave a speech at one of Hillary Clinton’s campaign events in New Hampshire. Let me tell you, after watching this 30 minute speech now four times, I have never felt so much love for a celebrity or politician. And yes, I have spent 2 hours of my life watching the same speech.
She covers the topic of sexual assault specifically with one of our presidential candidates. If we have a person running for president that has bragged about sexually assaulted women, what kind of message does that show people? Can anyone sexually assault women then? Absolutely not. And we need someone to lead this country who has a zero tolerance for sexual assault. It’s not a matter of being “politically correct” either, sexual assault or “locker room talk” about something like this is not okay. There is absolutely no discussion. We need someone who recognizes problems instead of making excuses. After watching the speech, you leave feeling inspired and ready to cast your vote for the right candidate on Nov. 8. If you haven’t seen the whole speech but want to feel the same way I did, I put together some of my favorite moments:
1. “Our nation's leaders should meet basic standards of human decency.”
2. “We saw this candidate [Trump] actually bragging about sexually assaulting women. And I can't believe that I'm saying that a candidate for president of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women.”
3. “This wasn't just locker-room banter. This was a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior, and actually bragging about kissing and groping women.”
4. “This is not normal. This is not politics as usual. This is disgraceful. It is intolerable. And it doesn't matter what party you belong to - Democrat, Republican, independent - no woman deserves to be treated this way.”
5. “And I know it's a campaign, but this isn't about politics. It's about basic human decency. It's about right and wrong. And we simply cannot endure this, or expose our children to this any longer - not for another minute, and let alone for 4 years.”
6. “Because let's be very clear. Strong men - men who are truly role models - don't need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful. People who are truly strong lift others up. People who are truly powerful bring others together. And that is what we need in our next president.”
