Meditation, Especially In School, Is More Helpful Than You Think

My parents actually got me hooked on meditation as they have practiced it many times before. Many people believe that it always has to be some sort of ceremonial thing, with your legs crossed, on the floor, in a room so quiet you can hear a pin drop. That's not really the case with modern meditation practices. All you really need is a space that you feel comfortable in, and just close your eyes and clear your head. If you believe you're lost and are not sure where to start I suggest using the app Calm, which provides voice-guidance and plays nice, calmly sounds.

But onto why specifically in college that this is important — Research has been done with students at elite universities who use meditative practices to cope with the stresses they have in school, which is exactly what mediation is for. It does actually help relieve stress and some anxiety and depression while also improving brain function. It's a form of mental relaxation, which everyone should be getting often especially in college.

A common misconception among students is that there is only one type of meditation, which is: Meditating. Not true, there are actually multiple types of meditation, found on Medical News Today that help the user with different things. There is Loving-kindness meditation (Metta Meditation), that helps with anger and can reduce depressive symptoms; Body scan/progressive relaxation, which involves tensing and relaxing muscles; Mindfulness meditation, that promotes awareness and improves focus and memory; Breath Awareness meditation, which of course is breathing techniques and helps with emotional flexibility; Kundalini yoga, which is a physical meditation, Zen meditation, which is the original Buddhist practice that involves more spirituality; lastly there is Transcendental meditation, that involves slow breathing and mantras. So, really, there are many forms of meditation that can fit whatever you need, making it a very versatile, healthy practice.

I know from my experiences practicing meditation that I've become a much more aware and conscious person, and it has definitely helped me with my stress. There are many different ways people deal with stress and negative feelings, but you can never have too many coping mechanisms at your disposal, so hopefully, you take into consideration practicing meditation and see the benefits of using it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
