I would rather eat 20 burritos in one sitting than go to the gym.
I am not going to act like I am the most fit person in the world. I often reference myself as Fat Amy from Pitch Perfect who states, "Don't sign me up for cardio." I was never an athletic person, and I grew accustomed to eating whatever I wanted without gaining weight. Well-- that was the case. Then I hit college and the late night taco-bell runs and party weekends full of beer caught up to me.
I was never a stick. I have always had a curvy body. I don't think I ever fit in a size 2, even when I was a baby, Being young, impressionable, and surrounded by skinny girls in middle school, there was always a part of me that had body image issues. As I got older though, I started embracing having hips and a woman's figure.
Now is when I come to my dilemma. I always thought it was an urban myth that as you got older, the things you do in your younger years catch up. The freshman 15 is a real thing. I started gaining weight and showing in spots I am less than proud of. I grab fast food because it's convenient and tastes great in the moment. Bathing suit shopping is a dreadful experience, and so are fluorescent lights. I have gained weight since freshman year of college. That was 2012. Four years later, I've decided to make a change. Not for a guy, not for others, but for me. I have a habit of putting myself and my body last. If I spent my energy I use on going out, drinking, and dating into getting fit I would be a happier and healthier person. So I've made a plan, which only started a week ago. This is my checklist for a positive, healthy, happy version of you.
1. Do this for yourself. No one else.
Changing your lifestyle should be for you, not the hot guy at school or the girls you hangout with. Ultimately this is your life, and your choice.
2. Positive vibes.
Wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and tell yourself that you're beautiful and the things you like physically or personality wise. Reminding yourself that you have self love and keeping a positive mind can help your mind push through the day.
3. Eating habits.
I love bacon. I could bathe in it, but it's not healthy for my body. It's okay to cheat here and there, but start nourishing your body with things that are good for it; proteins, clean carbs, calcium, veggies. Also remember everyone is different, some people take out carbs or are vegan. Do what works for you. Don't stop eating completely because you're doing more harm than good. Watch out for proportions and late night snacking.
4. Make a group effort.
This is by far my favorite tip. My friends and I all came to the conclusion we want to get fit and change our lifestyles. We decided to make a group chat and discuss what we're eating and plan when to go to the gym together. It's easier to have close friends who can motivate you and vice versa. We also accept we are not the same and do some things differently. Having a support system to push you to go to the gym on days you don't want to is something that has definitely helped me.
5. Water.
Stay hydrated, there's not much to it.
6. Set realistic goals.
Again, pretty simple. It is not realistic to lose 50 pounds in a week. Set weekly goals for yourself whether it be a few pounds, adding weight to your machine, or even running on the treadmill longer. These weekly goals can help motivate you and feel like you have accomplished something for the week.
7. This is the only time cheating is okay.
You're human. Which means you enjoy treating yourself and indulging. The idea is to work hard and if you have a slice of cake or some ice cream it's okay The idea is moderation. You don't to eat the whole gallon of ice cream. It's okay to cheat here and there just remind yourself of your goals and stay motivated.
I have only been doing this for a week, and at this point I can't see a difference besides being sore. However, I know that's okay. Again, I don't expect to be any thinner in a week, and these tips are what have helped me. They may be for you they might not be, come up with your own tips too. Do what inspires you. I know this journey wont be easy, but I know my body will love me for it.
