This past weekend was a big celebration for the Spartan community. The Spartans came out of no where with about three seconds left on the clock against our smallest of sisters, the University of Michigan Wolverines. We got ahold of the ball, we ran the ball, and we did not let a single wolverine stop us on our way to victory. In my personal opinion, that was one of the best plays I have ever witnessed in my short years of being a Michigan StateSpartan.
For years, there has been this rivalry between MSU and U of M, but that never stopped the Spartans from trying their hardest to prove to the world that we are as worthy as they may think they are. Unfortunately for everyone who thinks that Michigan State is the trash compared to Michigan, you are so unbelievably wrong, my friend.
So, what does it truly mean to be a Spartan? What do we stand for? What are we trying to prove to the world? Being a Spartan is much more than going to an amazing and fun Big Ten Conference party school. Being a Spartan is more than getting up at six o’clock in the morning to tailgate for games on the weekends. Being a Spartan is more than just going to our classes and doing the work to get by. It is so much more than what meets the eye.
Throughout the week, it came to my attention more than once that a lot of Michigan State University students were choosing to stay away from the Ann Arbor scene. Some people had reasons along the lines of being sick, not having the money to go or even exams to study for the upcoming week. Although all of these reasons are beyond valid, there was one reason that stuck out to me the most. A handful of friends were telling me that they did not want to risk getting into some sort of altercation with a Wolverine.
To some people, this is not a surprise, but to me, it was. I have traveled to other schools to root our team on and have been disappointed and shocked by the lack of sportsmanship throughout the other campuses. My friends and I have been pushed, told to f**k off, and so many other disrespectful gestures just for wearing green and white. Now, I know that not every Spartan is the greatest Spartan in the world and I am fully aware that sports fans like to bad mouth each other. I am as equally as guilty as the next guy for talking some smack and getting a rise out of people, but it was still a shock to me that a lot of students avoid Ann Arbor because they wanted to divert from the awful attitudes of Wolverine fans and potential flying fists.
And now the punter at Michigan is receiving death threats and suicide suggestions? So much for sticking by your team no matter what is the outcome. Sore. Losers.
So, here’s to you, Spartan nation. You kept your cool throughout the weekend AND got to celebrate a win of a lifetime. As for you, Wolverine fans, this is what I have to say to your poor excuses and bad attitudes:
