It's about time! July has been an extraordinary month for women in sports. From the USNWT winning the World Cup to the Arizona Cardinals hiring Jen Welter as their assistant coach, it seems like anything is possible. The stigma regarding the NFL and women has been shattered. Yes, women watch football. Yes, women understand football, and yes, women now coach football.
Dr. Jen Welter is a seasoned athlete with 14 years of experience as a football player. Not only was she an avid athlete, but she was an extremely studious person as well. According to ESPN, "She first earned a master’s in sports psychology and then a doctorate in psychology from Capella University in Minnesota." Welter has a positive attitude and always took on the toughest challenges.
Welter's motto is "Tell me the problem, and we can tackle it! Challenges are fun!" She is an inspiration to all women and has broken barriers down that no other woman has done before. According to the official Cardinals Website, "Bringing in Welter is another step toward diversity. Her football resume is long. [She] was the first female to play a non-kicking position in a men’s pro football league when she played running back and special teams for the Revolution in 2014. She also won two gold medals playing for Team USA in the International Federation of American Football Women’s World Championship in 2010 and 2013."
Talk about girl power! Welter is paving the way for women in this male dominated sport. Who says girls can't be strong, tough, in charge or talk about sports? It's about time women are able to follow their "impossible" dreams! With Welter leading the way for the Cardinals, I would not be surprised to see more women holding positions in the NFL. Like Welter said in her Twitter post, "Every woman can walk a little taller. Every girl can dream a little bigger."
