Kentucky has become the first team in the NBA to have three number one picks in the NBA draft. As much as we like to brag about our program, it was humbling to find out that Kentucky didn’t even have a number one pick until 2010 when John Wall went to the Washington Wizards. In Washington, Wall has become one of the faces of that franchise. The next number one draft pick was Anthony Davis in 2012 when he went to the New Orleans Pelicans. Davis has carried the Pelicans to the playoffs, and has also become the face of the Pelicans franchise.
Karl-Anthony Towns is, again, a reason that Kentucky has made history. He was selected to be sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves in this year’s draft. Leading up to the draft, there was debate if Towns would be selected by Minnesota, or if Jahlil Okafor, former Duke player, would be picked over Towns. Our prayers were answered and Towns was selected (like we ever had any doubts). Willie Cauley-Stein was then selected as the sixth pick to go to the Sacramento Kings. Later on in the draft, Trey Lyles went as the 12th pick to the Utah Jazz, and Devin Booker went right after as 13th to the Phoenix Suns. The draft continued into the second round where Andrew Harrison was selected by the Phoenix Suns, but will be traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Dakari Johnson was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder. After some despair after having only one of the twins drafted, we were happy to find out that Aaron Harrison will be playing for the Charlotte Hornets’ summer league team.
Kentucky already made history in 2010 when they had the most first round picks in the draft with a total of 5. This year’s team was still one of the best Kentucky and the world has ever seen.
Here’s to the success of next year, and we will continue to strive for 9.
