Happy 70th Birthday, Bikini!

Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear bikini, Happy birthday to you!

That's right, this year is the 70th birthday of the swimsuit staple of summer, the bikini. And whether you're a size four or a size 24, it's time to celebrate!

On July 5th, 1946 the very first bikini was introduced by French designer Louis Reard, who was also an automobile engineer. After this swimsuit became extremely popular overseas, Reard opened and ran a bikini shop in Paris for 40 years. Granted he made the clever swimsuits to allow women to tan easily, he also ended up creating a huge confidence booster for many women.

Throughout the past few years, the stigma of "imperfect" women wearing these "revealing" swimsuits has been broken and more people have gained confidence as a result.

This plus size model, feminist, and mother-of-two, Tess Holiday, founded Eff Your Beauty Standards, which is a social media platform that aims to build confidence in both women and men of all sizes. Tess also has a plus size women's clothing line named "MBLM" that is available for retail at Penningtons. All in all, she slays.

On top of individuals like Tess trying to make a difference, companies like Buzzfeed are also taking rude comments and turning them into jokes to show that plus size women can wear whatever they want and still look amazing.

Women's online magazine Bustle, written by both men and women, has put together a list of stores that push the message that "every body is a beach body." These stores sell adorable and wonderfully priced bikinis for a variety of women.

And wearing this fantastic summer staple doesn't have to be hard, no matter what size you are. Stores like Target have plus size bikinis almost identical to the smaller sizes which creates fashion equality among all of their shoppers. And they have amazing prices!

And let's not forget about the 1960's hit "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" by Brian Hyland, which was written about a girl that was too shy to reveal her polkadot bikini on the beach. This was in part because bikinis were new to American women around the time that this song was released, and a lot of people thought they were too risqué. Good thing women became more open to them!

It's truly amazing to think that the creation of a swimsuit was able to spark such a movement among people to the point that they are confident enough to be out in public showing off their bodies. This is the type of constant positivity that women (and men) need, especially in current day society.

So, while you're enjoying your summer by the pool or on the beach, make sure you remember to celebrate your bikini, because the idea of it is probably older than some of your grandparents. And because it's allowing you to get an awesome tan and to look great while doing so!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
