If somehow you don’t know what I am referring to let me clear things up. April, a 15-year-old giraffe at Animal Adventure Park in New York, became a viral sensation after the park started a live camera feed to let the world in to watch April through her final days in pregnancy and then giving birth to her new calf. The “Giraffe Cam” was started on February 10th as a way to allow the world to be a part of the birth of the calf, as well as to educate the world about giraffes. Throughout the past two months, I, like a lot of people, became obsessed with watching the live feed. I spent countless hours just watching a pregnant giraffe walk around, waiting for a calf.
I was consumed from the beginning. Watching April on the live feed became a daily event, usually several times a day. April was far more interesting than any homework I had or any test I needed to study for. My friends started poking fun at me because if I had my phone in my hand, I was probably watching the Giraffe Cam. I checked in during my classes, at work, really anywhere that I had a Wi-Fi connection (I also used quite a bit of data over the 2 months leading up to April delivering her calf).
The calf (name to be determined) was born on April 15, 2017.
Now the time has come for the camera to be taken down. The park decided, before the birth, the camera would come down 5-10 days after the birth to allow the park to prepare for its opening. While I, and many others, understand the camera coming down, I will admit I am a little sad to see the Giraffe Cam go.
April, Oliver, and baby are all well. The staff at Animal Adventure Park left us with a hopeful attitude about the future of the camera.
Now I need a new animal live feed to watch 24/7, but until then I guess I’ll get back to life and stop procrastinating everything in my life.
