Gators Head To The SEC Championship

Despite their sloppy performance in the game clinching win against Vanderbilt and against FAU

Unlike the Gator’s 38-10 upset over Ole Miss, and the 27-3 defeat over Georgia, the Nov. 7 win against Vanderbilt was not so pretty. In fact, the Gators showed very little promise of sealing the SEC East title until the fourth quarter. Florida (9-1) finally got a kick through the goal posts with about three minutes left in the game after Commodores running back Ralph Webb, a Gainesville native, ran for a 74-yard touchdown late in the second quarter, putting Vanderbilt ahead 7-6.

New Florida kicker addition Austin Hardin had players, coaches, and fans biting their nails as he set up for the 43-yard SEC Championship clinching kick.

“I had 100 percent confidence in Austin making that kick,” said quarterback Treon Harris.

“I put a towel over my head,” said DL Alex McCalister. The homecoming game audience boomed with cheers as the kick flew into the net.

While proud of his team’s accomplishments, head coach of the Florida Gators Jim McElwain knows it was a bumpy road to get where they are.

“Let’s face it... we stole one,” said McElwain. “Calvin [Long, McElwain’s escort from the Florida Highway Patrol] is probably going to arrest me on the way out the door. I don’t blame him.”

Even though the game was not attractive in it of itself, the outcome is. The now eighth ranked Florida Gators will compete in the 2015 SEC Championship for the first time since 2009.

The big game is set for Dec. 5 in Atlanta against -- we don’t know who, yet. It all depends on the upcoming Saturday. Ole Miss could possibly come back into the mix after beating LSU this weekend in Oxford, Miss. However, Alabama is heavily forecasted to meet the Gators in Atlanta. Unless the Auburn Tigers pull a major upset against Alabama in the Iron Bowl, the field is set for the 2015 SEC Championship Game as Alabama is only one win away from taking the West.

While the next couple weeks revolve around rivalries, NCAA college football rankings, and bowl positioning, one thing is for sure. Despite Florida’s second sloppy win of the season against the FAU Owls, the Gators have wrapped up the SEC East title and will be heading to Atlanta after one more home game against the notorious FSU Seminoles.

Coach McElwain chooses to focus on upcoming practices and preparing for the SEC Championship game rather than dwell on the messy 7-6 win over Vanderbilt, and barely beating huge underdog FAU this past Saturday.

“When you’re on a championship run, sometimes there are games like this -- and champions figure out ways to win them,” said McElwain. “It was a group of guys who gave everything they had for this university and the state of Florida to win that ballgame. That tells something about who they are.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
