On Sunday night, Florida State's head coach Willie Taggart announced that redshirt senior quarterback, Deondre Francois will no longer be apart of the football program.
Taggart says, "Last night, I informed Deondre Francois that he is no longer a member of the Florida State football program. As we build a new culture and foundation for FSU football, we have high expectations for all of our student-athletes and we will not shy away from those high standards of conduct. We are moving forward as a program."
After a now-deleted video surfaced on Instagram, posted by Francois' girlfriend, Diamond Lindsey, viewers can distinctively hear a man and woman fighting, with the man threatening the woman by assaulting her.
On her post, Lindsey wrote the following:
"I normally don't put my business on ig, but I am tired of my name being drug through the mud since the beginning, I have been silent. For 2 years I have been in a domestic situation with (Deondre Francois)."
"I thought I loved him and thought he could change for the better but it has gotten worse. I lost my first child because of all of the beating and I suffer from Post Partum depression. This situation is taking a toll on my life. Yes, I stayed after that because I was stupid and blinded by love."
"This isn't love. You are a coward and this isn't right. Just because you are who you are that doesn't give you the right to put your hands on a woman ever!!!"
This was not the first time that Francois had a run in with domestic abuse allegations. In January 2018, police had investigated the couple, with Lindsey being pregnant (allegedly) at the time. She states that Francois broke a door, picked her up, threw her to the ground and cut her forearm. However, it was actually Francois who made the 911 call saying that she came into his home, broke his stuff and tried to beat him up. No arrest was made due to "conflicting statements and lack of independent witnesses."
Also in April 2018, Francois was believed to be selling marijuana from his apartment. After a search warrant was granted, Francois was given a citation for the possession of marijuana. After this citation happened, Taggart had a talk with Francois, explaining what his expectations as a student-athlete was and how "He's got to be smart, who he's around, what he's around and make good decisions."
With an ever growing issue such as domestic abuse arising in our society, I am glad that FSU has made the decision to not put these allegations aside. In many other cases, where someone gets a pardon since they are a successful athlete, shows people that athletes are being put above the law, which is wrong. By dismissing Francois, FSU is breaking this wall of protecting players and showing their support for the people who are usually ignored or dismissed.
If you are someone who is suffering from domestic abuse, there are resources for you. Break The Cycle helps young people to learn warning signs and promote healthy relationships. You are not alone.
