Have you ever sat back and realized where we would be without technology? Would you still be where you are today? Would you have the education, job, medical care, etc. that you have? It is incredible to think we are able to connect on such a level with technology; However, it can have its drawback.
As progressive as technology is, it is said to be addictive, and can even have a negative effect on your health and often times creates a divide between people. I'm sure that anyone reading this article can agree that they themselves or someone they know never goes anywhere without their cell phone or has even lost sleep from using technology. We also all know that one person that can never seem to take their eyes off of their cell phone or give you the time of day. Technology truly can get in the way of the connection you make with people face-to-face and, online communication ultimately lacks authenticity.
When you are eating dinner with your family, visiting with relatives, hanging out with friends or whatever it may be, put your devices down and enjoy these moments. Try to refrain from checking your notifications, emails, text messages and various News Feeds and take time to enjoy the world around you. You would be surprised at how much you miss when your face is glued to a screen. The time spent on your computer, cell phone, television, etc. will stop you from connecting with your family, friends, surroundings and even yourself. The key is to enjoy all that technology has to offer without abusing it.
Spend less time sharing the moments you experience on social media and a little more time relishing in said moments with the people you experience them with. Spend less time idolizing and envying what other people share on the internet and come to terms with the fact that people share what they want people to see online. Spend less time obsessing over your friends lists on Facebook, followers and likes on Instagram and Twitter because they don't measure your self-worth.
Technology will undoubtedly be around forever, and furthermore, it will only advance as time goes on. So, it is vital that you find a balance between embracing all that technology has to offer and all that the people around you have to offer. Don't allow yourself to become detached from reality, because when you stop and reflect, how many friends, followers and likes you have on social media will never define you. The mark you make on the world and what you accomplish during your time is what defines you. Disconnect to reconnect.
