Though invented in the early 1990s, fidget spinners are the new "toy" that has taken the world and social media by storm. You can hardly scroll through Facebook without seeing a picture of the fidget spinner that is relatively cheap and comes in a huge variety of colors and styles. A fidget spinner has two or three paddle-shaped blades attached to a central core. When you squeeze the core, you give the blades a flick and they spin. This is the most recent toy craze and it seems like every kid has one, but why?
This toy has become banned in schools nationwide because everyone wants them and people are abusing their rights of having them. In fact, 32% of the top 200 high schools in the United States have banned fidget spinners because of the distraction that they've caused. The purpose of a fidget spinner is similar to the popular fidget cube. Both have been marketed as stress relieving toys. Fidget spinners (and cubes for that matter) are for people with ADHD, autism, anxiety, etc. They're not supposed to be the newest "toy trend," but that's exactly what has happened. This toy is meant to help people. Sure, there are enough fidget spinners to go around, but there's no reason to get them banned in public places/schools for the ones that need it. If you want one, go get one. Don't abuse them so they get banned and the people who need safe, therapeutic help can't use them.
If your child doesn't need a fidget spinner, leave it at home with all of their other toys. If children are able to improve academically and socially because they use a toy that helps ground them and ease their anxiety, don't ruin it for them.
