Felicity Huffman was previously arrested on March 12th, for paying $15,000 to improve her 19 year-old daughter's SAT scores. But you already knew that, as it was one of the many college admission scandals that was the headline of every newspaper and broadcast for weeks after. After pleading guilty in May, the saga of the never-ending transgressions is still continuing. Sentenced to 14 days behind bars, Huffman has just begun her sentence in prison on this past Tuesday, the 15th.
Huffman requested no special treatment and did not ask to be put in isolation, and will therefore be in general population. However, she stated that she wants to use the "short time there to learn as much as possible about how the other inmates ended up in prison", as prison justice reform is a very important cause to her.
I find this statement to be both inappropriate and demeaning: rather than serving her sentence humbly and respectfully, she is choosing to use her sentence to her advantage, to alter her current stance in society and promote an altruistic and ambitious self. By making her sentence a "inspiring" expedition to exploit the other inmates and learn their stories, she is losing sight of the real reason she is there: to reflect and repent on the crime she has committed. I fully endorse her taking a stand as a reformer of justice, however it seems entirely inopportune to further the cause while she is serving as an inmate herself.
