Twitter, Facebook, Instagram all blew up in my face every time I opened my social media. I tried to ignore the posts and statuses by every celebrity I follow and admire. The closer the election got, the stronger the push of opinion became. I would check maybe an hour later, and the same content would be floating around my social media sites. I understand that all people have different opinions. However, it seemed almost coincidental that every single celebrity I knew and loved was pushing his or her opinion onto the mass population. I actually started to develop a strong opinion about the tactics these talented people were using to express their opinions.
We look to celebrities for advice and guidance on fashion, relationships, music, or even fitness tips. However, an opinion about politics is not something one should ever look to other people for. Politics should depend on a person's values and perspective, not on whether or not JLo agrees with Trump. I understand these people want to stand for what they believe in, and that is perfectly fine. But was it just me, or were they a little too pushy about their opinions during this election? Yes, they were encouraging people to go out and vote. But who were they encouraging individuals to vote for? The person who satisfies their needs the most: Hilary. They were interested in their followers not only voting, but voting for who THEY wanted to win. I saw some posts saying, "if you're voting for Trump, unfollow or block me." I'm honestly appalled by this.
I'm sorry, who is Pink to tell others they can't have a certain political opinion?
Wait, I didn't know that Beyonce was the one who determined my political orientation.
I mean, really, it's selfish, arrogant, and absolutely insulting to fans. As an artist, performer, or entertainer, it is one's job to do exactly that: perform, entertain, create. In addition, it is not a celebrities job to criticize, judge, and shun others because they have a different opinion or political orientation than they do. In addition, it is definitely not their job to pick and choose who is allowed to follow their music or movies.
I watched a video the other day of this guy named Bill Burr who just completely ripped apart this egotistical behavior given off by celebrities. He says sarcastically, "Oh I want to vote for Trump but if I do we'll lose Cher." He then goes on to say that no one cares if these celebrities move to Canada or not. What these celebrities don't get is it literally affects no one. It affects no one if Cher, Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato all move to Canada because they didn't get their way in the election. Honestly, the arrogance that is radiating off of these people is uncanny. Seriously? Threatening their fans that they'll move to Canada just because their fans won't vote for a lying criminal who isn't even fit to run in office? It affects no one, and what they don't get is that most people don't care.
On the other hand, what do we as a nation care about? Maybe we care about the fact that our economy is in trouble. We care about how the gap between the middle class and the super rich is increasing. We may just care about the fact that our country is at war and we need strength to fight. We care that no one in the middle class can find jobs. We care about keeping our nation safe as a whole. We care about being able to defend ourselves and create our own individual protection.
Therefore, most of us don't care about what celebrities think because, in the end, all the problems we care about don't even remotely affect them. They don't have to worry about money or finding a job. They don't have to worry about protecting themselves because they have people for that. They are completely financially stable and have no right to attempt to take away our choices. We voted for the person who best benefits the mass population.
In the end, celebrities just need to back off, and let the masses have their own opinion. Frankly, it's not up to them to choose who anyone, including myself, supports.
