This week, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, known as E3, showed a number of games coming to all gaming stations Fall/Holiday 2016 and early 2017. These announcements were met with a great deal of excitement from fans as game sequels and new games had playable demos for them.
After looking through all of the coverage and the website, I came up with a list of the ten best game announcements from this year. Announcement trailers and photos will be listed here, depending on what was available for each game.
1. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
For those who have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Kingdom Hearts 3 (including myself), you can find joy in the announcement for Kingdom Hearts 2.8. This particular game will include a remastered version of Kingdom Hearts 3D, HD cinematics for the app game (Kingdom Hearts X), and a brand new playable episode. The episode is set after the events of the origin story game (Birth by Sleep) called “A fragmentary passage.” Gamers will get the chance to play as Aqua as the episode explains the time she spent trapped in the realm of darkness. The episode will also showcase how battle and graphics will be for the next major installment of the series. Disney plus action and Final Fantasy equals a fantastic game
2. Injustice 2
DC heroes and villains return to battle it out in the sequel to the 2013 hit game. While little has been revealed about the game so far, the trailer emphasizes “Every battle defines you.” This could not be truer because in this game, every battle will award items and gear to the characters you play as, modifying stats and abilities for battle. The developers also promised a bigger roster of playable villains and heroes, evident when playable demos showed Atrocitius, Gorilla Grodd and Supergirl (who is now an extremely popular character thanks to the CW show). Story mode will also continue with the remainder of Superman’s regime fighting against Batman’s insurgency. It will be interesting to see which other characters will be included and who they will side with in the story!
3. Watch Dogs 2
While the prequel game was not a huge hit with fans in 2014, this continuation of the game promises to succeed where its predecessor failed. This time, players will be controlling the character of Marcus Holloway, a skilled hacker living in San Francisco. Marcus, now a victim of the ctOS 2.0 pinning him for a crime he has not committed, puts his hacking skills to use in the city. Hacking will allow you to even fight strategically, letting you detonate or make things malfunction around enemies. While you can have some happy hacking here, Marcus will set out to expose corrupt corporations and try to clear himself of his alleged crime.
4. Dishonored 2
Another huge hit from the past, this sequel will be a great follow-up of the first game. This time, players can choose to play as Dishonored protagonist Corvo or they can play as Emily, the usurped empress of Dunwall. Each of these characters will have different supernatural abilities, something players can now shape with a skill tree. With new abilities and a new location, the duo will assassinate (or not, something you can choose to do in the game) their way to regaining Dunwall.
5. Pokémon Sun and Moon
After almost 20 years of trying to catch ‘em all, the newest generation of Pokémon will be hitting stores this November! There will also be new legendary Pokémon, new starters (Already decided on Rowlet) and other new creatures! The trailer also announces a new battle called a Battle Royale, where players will face off with three other trainers all at the same time. I was a little disappointed cooler Pokémon were not announced this time, but the new 3DS game should not disappoint!
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The new game of the successful “Legend of Zelda” franchise is looking to surpass all other games in the series. In this game, Link awakens after 100 years to find that an evil force called “The Calamity Ganon” has ravaged the land, with most abandoned places returning back to nature. While Link has to find a way to defeat this evil, he will be able to do it in an extremely open world. This new open world is larger than the Hyrule of Twilight Princess and it also looks stunning! Zelda is a beloved series and this new game will be better than ever before!
7. Horizon: Zero Dawn
This much anticipated game, which was announced at E3 2015, is now set for release in 2017. Players will play as Aloy, a huntress living on a post-apocalyptic Earth 1000 years in the future. While it is set in the future, the game has a prehistoric look to it, mostly due to the fact that the wild creatures roaming the land are robotic dinosaurs. Aloy will need to hunt these creatures down in order to survive this robotic wasteland.
8. Resident Evil 7
Remember when I said the fun and childhood flashback inducing Pokemon series is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year? Well it looks like Resident Evil will also be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as well. This game is flashback inducing too, provided said flashbacks are your worst nightmares and fears of the dark (I love the series, but even I have my moments of these games scaring the crap out of me). Not much was revealed about it at E3 this year. All the trailer for the game shows is how this game will try to focus on a darker atmosphere and try to catch the player off guard at any second with a monster attack (this is a new character, one that does not have the fighting prowess of other Resident Evil protagonists). This will come out January 2017, so I guess ring in the new year with some scares and fighting for survival?
9. Final Fantasy XV
This game, originally called Final Fantasy Versus XIII, will finally be released at the end of September this year. This game was announced years ago, but developers have said game development is nearing completion. In this game, players take on the role of Noctis Caelum, the prince of the nation called Lucius. Combined with open world play, players will see returning elements of other Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games (battle decks, weapon choice, magic and summons) incorporated beautifully into the game. Developers have also stated this will be a new chapter in the game franchise, allowing both seasoned and new players to enjoy the game!
10. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Remastered
I remember when this game released in 2011 and heard nothing but great things about it. I did not own a copy since I could not buy things on my own then, but loved it when I got to play it with my friends! This game, now being remastered for the PS4 and Xbox One, will call players back to the land of Skyrim and go on epic quests once more!
While these were not all of the games coming out soon, they are the best ones (in my opinion) to be hitting game systems! With many beloved game series having sequels or remastered versions, I have a feeling it will be a great game season!
