Summer is the perfect time to start collecting things for your dorm room next year! Express yourself through art, lights and objects in your dorm room — but don't forget to make it comfortable! Your dorm room is not only where you sleep, but where you do homework, socialize and live! Below are some tips and inspiration to make your dorm room the comfiest in your residence hall.

Add a cute rug

Dormify

Cover up those cold tile floors of your dorm room with a fuzzy rug. That way, when you get up in the morning, it won't feel like your feet are freezing off. This also makes the room feel more comfortable and homey.

Houseplants

Houseplants are a quick and easy way to make your dorm feel like home. Having a cute little plant to take care of is a good de-stressor and can help teach you some responsibility. I recommend cactuses and succulents, as they don't require too much attention.

Add some photographs

Dormify

Memories of friends and family back home can ease your homesickness. You can add to your photos throughout the year with the new memories you make at school.

Posters

Dormify

Personalize your walls with some of your unique interests to leave your mark on the room.

Blankets

Perfect to snuggle in when you're feeling homesick, tired, or just lazy. Watch some Netflix, do some homework, or whatever you need to do while wrapped in a comfy blanket.

Throw pillows

Throw pillows are so fun because you can personalize them or have them compliment the 'theme' of your dorm. They're also useful for making your bed more comfortable or for sleeping on.

Lights

Whether they're used for mood lighting or just brightening up your room, you can't go wrong with lights. String lights are a popular and easy way to add some light to your room. You can also get a cute lamp or a functional floor lamp! A brighter room will make an illusion of more space.

Knick Knacks

Funny memories, gifts from family, souvenirs from foreign places… all are things you can add to your dorm to make it feel homier. They can also be great conversation starters!

Mirrors

The mirrors schools provide can be a little…lacking. I recommend getting an over the door full length mirror so you can see your whole outfit for the day. This will also make the room seem bigger.

Wall art

Again, express your interests and individuality through your wall art. This is another great conversation starter! Inspiring quotes, tapestries, signs, etc are all things you can hang on your dorm wall.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
