"Coverage That Connects"
I see it every weekday after The Morning Java, after every interview clip, the statement that has rung true since the website's inception in July of 2014. What Dejan Kovacevic has done is completely change the game of sports journalism as DK Pittsburgh Sports is "the first of its kind in the U.S. or Canada for an established sports journalist." What DK is providing is coverage that connects to it's readers, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
DK Pittsburgh Sports is a website that covers Pittsburgh sports. "That's it? Really? Plenty of other people do that too!" Except, they don't. You see, not only does DK provide coverage of the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates, it also covers Pitt, Penn State, WVU, Robert Morris, Duquesne, the Riverhounds and the Olympics when they roll around. That doesn't even begin to mention the minor league affiliates like the Baby Pens and the farm teams of the Pirates.
"Okay, so you're telling me that one guy, DK, does ALL of this? Get aht a tahn." No, he doesn't, in fact, DK has complied some of the very best sports writers. With a team like Josh Yohe to cover the Pens, Matt Gajtka on the Buccos, Jason Mackey for the Steelers, and even has beat writers the cover the three major college teams as well. Audrey Snyder in State College, Matt Welch in Morgantown and newcomer Lance Lysowski for Pitt. Dejan has assembled Pittsburgh's chapter of The Avengers or Justice League of sports writers.
"So everyone writes their stories, that's it? I'm not sold." Listen, All day, every day new stories, reports, updates are filed. Every weekday, first thing in the morning, Morning Java is on the site ready to be watched and later as a download for podcast format. There are Live Q's at 5, which a writer from the site takes your questions on either a specific topic or at random. Not to mention podcasts of radio shows and any breaking news regarding your favorite area team. There is so much more content than what I'm sharing, I want you to go and see for yourself!
"Where's the "connecting coverage" Lib?" DK has said from day one that he wants the reader to feel as close to the team as possible, and he and his team have nailed that in every way possible. Between interviews, pictures, team stats and exclusive inside the team content, DK provides coverage that no one else simply can.
Look, I love great writing. I love reading great writing about the teams I love with all the extra content I get with subscribing to DK Pittsburgh Sports. I'm a fan and I only wish to show that and my support to all of those wonderful men and women who make that site run. They do a great job, not to mention Wick's pics which are absolutely stunning. Not to mention Dali Kovacevic, who runs so much behind the scenes that a lot of us will never see beside her creating all the stat and schedule graphics.
Like I said, this is all Internet based. No print, no hard have-to-meet deadlines. Most times DK is telling us not to way up because his column from tonight's game won't be up until very late. This is the first website of it's kind, people, and it's giving it's readers content that just isn't available in ordinary newspaper columns. Besides, everyone on the staff are very very great people.
What Dejan and the staff have created for our city is nothing short of amazing in terms of content, creativity and connecting with the fans. Which I think may be what his goal was from the start.
