Dear Mr. President-Elect Donald Trump

I fear.

President-elect Donald Trump,

It's November 9, 2016.

I’m scared. I’m nervous. I’m anxious. I want to throw up. There is a knot in my stomach. I’m crying. I’m horrified. I’m embarrassed. I'm hurt.

There are no words to express how shocked I have become over the past few hours of learning you are going to be POTUS. So many Americans voted out of fear rather than compassion. There are no words that you could say to make me feel any better about this outcome. I do want to let you know, as a Hillary supporter, the thoughts that many Americans have right now as we try to settle this divide in our country.

I fear for blacks. I fear for any American of color. I fear for minorities. I fear for the racist, ignorant comments that are to come in the future. I fear for children who will be bullied because of race.

I fear for my friends who are LGBTQ. Love is love. Humans are humans. We are all the same. I fear that they will not feel accepted for who they are.

I fear for my future children. I fear that this day will go down in history as one of the worst turns in America. I fear that we will backtrack our progress by milestones. I fear that my children will grow up in an even more divided country.

I fear for immigrants. I fear for the children whose parents now face deportation. I fear for the American dream turning into the American nightmare.

I fear for refugees. I fear for the innocent civilians who are counting on our humanity and leadership to save them. I fear for their lives so badly.

I fear for my fellow women. I fear that sexual assault and rape culture will never be taken seriously in this country. I fear that our progress as women will be backlashed with laughs and jokes.

I fear for everyone who is not a white male. The white male may see these issues, may hear about these issues, but these issues do not affect him. Just like they do not affect you, Mr. President. Your words are hurtful. You have ruined and degraded many people over your lifetime. I hope you realize this before you step foot into that office in January.

You may think that you got the white American vote, the silent majority vote, whatever you’d like to call it… but just know that these labels do not include me. I will stand beside my friends, my family, my fellow Americans of any race, religion, culture, or belief, and endure their sufferings and feel their pain. I will hear their words louder and offer them love and support with open arms. You will not silence me. I am not going anywhere.

I will not let you, Mr. President, ruin the positive change this country has created and fought to protect for so long.

To Donald Trump supporters,

I refuse to degrade you or your opinions solely on a political election. That is not what America stands for and that is not what I was raised or taught to do. But America also does not stand for racism, sexism, xenophobia, or any kind of prejudice that your President, our President, has expressed throughout this election. We owe each other human equality and human decency. I will not sit back and watch you gloat while your fellow Americans are truly terrified. I will not let you use Donald Trump's victory as a reason or justification to make fun of, laugh at, bully, or degrade any women, blacks, Muslims, Latinos, people with disabilities, gays, transgenders, immigrants... the list goes on. This is not funny and this is not something to be making jokes about. And I understand that this comes from both sides - not just one. There will always be extremists who take it too far but I can promise that I will not be that person and I will expect the same from you.

I encourage you to speak out and stand up against the bigots who avidly support this man and use Donald Trump to justify their hateful words and actions toward fellow Americans. I often ponder the thoughts that go through your head every day and I really do wonder what you see in him that I don't. I’m asking you to understand the divide and bring us together by respect and support of each other.

I hope and pray that in four years I can look back and say “you were right.” I hope that Donald Trump can bring America together and build on our progress. I really do. But that is only my hope, for what the future holds is in the hands of everyone, not just a part of us. We cannot build on our progress if we are divided but we can if we fight together because, quite literally, love trumps hate.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
