Both endings and new beginnings can stir up a lot of emotions and questions. College is ending, and this ever-elusive "real world" that everyone talks about is starting. So here are some very common things that are probably going through your head as you close the book on your undergrad years.
1. Can school PLEASE just be over?
Let’s face it. You’ve been going through the motions for what, 16 years? Not counting Kindergarten or preschool, that is. You’ve been in school nearly your entire life and you're exhausted. The papers, the projects and tests...you’re burnt out. No matter how simple an assignment may be, you struggle to get out of bed, close Netflix and head to the library because you are just so over it. You’re done with demanding professors, roommate drama and never having clean pants because you didn’t have time to do laundry.
2. Wait...no…I don’t want to graduate!!!
Then the harsh reality sets in...if you graduate, you have to face the *gasp* real world. The paying bills, doing your taxes, working 9 a.m.-5 p.m. kind of real world you saw in "Office Space." You may think, I don’t want to sit at a desk until I die! I want to get drunk on a Thursday with my roommates and make the DD take us to McDonald’s after. I don’t want to give up the fact that I can walk at any time to my friend or boyfriend’s apartment to hang out. I love living in this microcosm that is campus.
3. What do I want to do with my life?
This is pretty self-explanatory. You just spent four years and thousands of dollars on a major to get a degree. But you may be thinking, now what? Maybe some of you are lucky enough to know what you want to do. I commend you on that. For me, I have such a broad major with many different career path opportunities that I’m a little overwhelmed. The daily existential crisis of, “Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? What should I do to make my mark on the world?” usually hits me around eleven or twelve at night when I’m exhausted, but my anxiety is wide awake and ready to party. Let me tell you, it's my favorite part of the day! Trying to function on less than five hours of sleep has really become a fun past time. Along with that comes games such as “How many cups of coffee do I need to drink to stay awake?," “How many cups of coffee does it take to make me twitch?” and my all time favorite, “How hard will my head hit my desk at work when I fall asleep today?”
4. What is life going to be like after?
You might be a lucky person who has a job after graduation already and is moving into their own place. Congratulations, you might as well be a unicorn. You might be on the job hunt, packing up your dorm or college apartment to move back in with mom and dad. But regardless, you’re probably wondering what life is going to be like post-grad. Will you adapt to living at home again after being on your own? Which of your college friends will stay in touch? Will you and your significant other manage long distance? There’s a lot up in the air for most college grads. The best advice from someone who is going through it is try to just take it a day at a time, but as one may assume, I can’t take my own advice.
5. What if I fail?
You will fail. A lot. I know it. But that doesn't mean you're going to be a failure. You will also succeed. Life is about balance and lessons learned. You're going to learn from your mistakes, and turn those lessons into success stories. Do not be afraid to fail.
After all of these questions surface as you are about to graduate, the best advice I could give is to enjoy your last few weeks as a college student. For the first time in my life, I’m realizing how fast time really does move. I blinked and now I’m graduating college and looking for jobs, when really I still feel like a child. I would love nothing more than to freeze time for a little, but I’m excited for the future to come.
After all, if we’ve made it this far, can’t we do anything? Congrats to my fellow grads!
