Not nearly as much excitement this week as Louisville is the only team that played themselves out of the playoff race. All eyes will certainly be on "The Game" as Ohio State and Michigan will once again face off with national championship hopes at stake. There are multiple undecided playoff spots, so time will tell if more mayhem is in store. Let's get to the rankings.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
It may not have been the prettiest of victories, but the Tide came out on top against UT Chattanooga. While some people are sure to overreact ahead of the Iron Bowl, Alabama still appears to be the unanimous number one team in the country. The offense has struggled at times (which is to be expected behind a freshman quarterback), but the defense remains elite and is a big reason the Crimson Tide are favored to win it all. At this point, the Tide are all but guaranteed a third consecutive playoff spot unless they lose to Auburn and Florida in back-to-back games.
2. Clemson Tigers
In my opinion, the Tigers still represent the biggest challenge for Alabama. Instead of focusing on the loss to Pitt, Clemson bounced back with a 22 point victory over Wake Forest. The victory clinched their second consecutive ACC Atlantic title. If Clemson can beat South Carolina and win the ACC Championship, they will guarantee themselves a playoff spot.
3. Ohio State Buckeyes
The Buckeyes got their revenge against Michigan State, but only barely. A failed two-point conversion by the Spartans late in the fourth 2quarter kept Ohio State's playoff hopes alive. The only problem is that the Buckeyes' path to playoff is unclear. Even with a victory against Michigan, Penn State would advance to the Big 10 title game due to their head-to-head victory. Could two teams from the Big 10 make it into the playoff? Ohio State better hope so...
4. Michigan Wolverines
Michigan also had somewhat of a down week as they were kept out of the end zone for the first half against Indiana. The offense will have to get going, likely without injured quarterback Wilton Speight, in order to beat a tough Ohio State team. Jim Harbaugh and Michigan will surely be looking to avenge last year's 42-13 defeat in the rivalry game. Ohio State is currently favored to win the upcoming matchup. However, the Wolverines have a clear path to the playoff: win out and get a spot.
5. Washington Huskies
Washington is currently in an interesting situation. They could potentially finish the season as 12-1 PAC 12 champions and still not make the playoff. If a two-loss Wisconsin or Penn State team wins the Big 10 and an 11-1 Ohio State team is available, who would the committee pick? Ohio State would surely have the better resume, but not the conference championship. I think Washington's best bet is to hope for a rematch with a hot USC team in the conference championship game. Avenging their only loss and beating a respected opponent might put the Huskies in the playoff.
6. Wisconsin Badgers
The Badgers playoff hopes ride on their ability to win the Big 10 championship. But first, they face Minnesota in a game that can either clinch or lose their Big 10 championship bid. Surely a 11-2 Wisconsin team that wins the Big 10 championship gets a playoff bid. It will be interesting to see which team is ranked higher if Wisconsin and Ohio State both get into the playoff, considering the Buckeyes' head-to-head win.
7. Oklahoma Sooners
Unfortunately for the Sooners, the time to impress the committee may already be up. While the Sooners dominated West Virginia this week, they still have two losses in arguably the weakest Power 5 conference this season. At least Oklahoma can still win the Big 12 title with a victory over Oklahoma State next weekend.
8. Louisville Cardinals
I had high hopes for this Louisville team and Lamar Jackson is the most exciting college football player I've seen since at least Johnny Manziel. The Cardinals lost their second game of the season this week, but they didn't just lose to Houston...they were humiliated. Louisville versus Houston was one of the season's most anticipated matchups until the Cougars lost twice and dropped out of the Top 25. And now, Houston eliminated Louisville from the playoff race and set up Tom Herman to restore Texas to its former glory. If it is any consolation, Lamar Jackson should still win the Heisman, which is no small feat.
9. Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State's turnaround season can reach new heights with a victory Michigan State next week. The Nittany Lions need to become huge Ohio State fans as a Buckeye victory is key to Penn State's conference title and playoff hopes. Regardless of Penn State's postseason destination, the victory over the Buckeyes seems to have rejuvenated the program and should be a good sign for the future. But for now, the Nittany Lions are still eyeing a playoff bid.
10. USC Trojans
Since the Trojans have three losses, there is no reason to discuss them as playoff contenders. But perhaps no team has improved as much as this one from week one up until now. Sam Darnold offers the program a star quarterback to build around and may even lead USC's return to glory. For now, the Trojans will have to settle for a bowl game, but next season don't be surprised to this team in the playoff race the whole season.
