It’s a Sunday night and that dreadful Sunday night feeling has already taken over and set in. Tomorrow will be the first day of the spring semester of 2016. Everyone knows that spring semester is so much harder on students and more stressful than the fall, even if there’s not a good solid reason as to why. The fall semester is just a nice test run for the actual, anxiety filled spring. But for the students at WKU, tomorrow won’t be the first day of spring classes like originally scheduled. Thanks to the e-mail from Bob Skipper, it will be a snow day. Another day to put off the stress and realities of life. Another day to sit in pajamas, order pizza, and do anything other than homework. My social media has been filled with tons of positive Skipper, Bob messages and praises upon praises for this delay of reality. But for me, I’m not excited for the snow day. I’m ready for the year to start and ready to be busy.
Being busy is such a blessing in disguise. While it is overwhelming to be lost in the middle of seventeen hundred different tasks, it is so rewarding to get things done and taken care of. If everyone starting looking at their responsibilities as blessings, how different would the world be?
Before you start scoffing at the idea of school, work, and everything in between as a blessing and not a curse, look at it with an open mind.
People all around this world would love to have an education, but don’t have the means to make that dream a reality. Think about that before you skip a class to watch another episode of Grey’s. There are individuals who have put in more resumes than imaginable and still can’t find a job to work. Think about that the next time you write an angry tweet about going in to work at, GASP, 8:00 A.M. Take the time to realize that whatever extracurricular activity you participate in, is such a blessing to be a part of. Whether you are active in a sorority, fraternity, church organization, sports, clubs, or anything else I failed to mentioned; you are so incredibly lucky to be surrounded by people who share the same interests as you and accepts you for who you are. Maybe meetings aren’t your favorite things or practice at 6:00 A.M. isn’t how you pictured your college years, I promise you will miss them eventually.
Although everyone is guilty of looking at their responsibilities as burdens, try to look at them for the good things they really are. Be thankful and gracious for your classes, even when the professor has a no absence policy and no extra credit available. It is a blessing to have something to work hard for and toward, and one day that diploma will make it worth all the while.
