I sometimes wonder what it would have been like growing up in a different decade. Preferably, a decade with less paranoia, violence and before the release of drastic, life-altering technology. Recalling some of history’s fondest moments, the '60s or '70s would have to be my two decades of choice. So now, lets throw it back to "Dancing Queen," platform shoes, bell-bottoms, lava lamps, drive-ins and "The Brady Bunch."
As I grow older, I become increasingly aware of how different my life would be had I been born in a decade prior to the '90s. What about those of us who would still appreciate malt shakes served with with two straws as a first date? Or, those of us who yearn for sneaky make-out sessions in the backs of cars during black and white drive-ins? What about those of us who wonder where the mystery has disappeared to in this predictable world?
Today, we are all so aware of every aspect of our surroundings. Twitter and Facebook leave little to the imagination and texting takes the place of verbal conversation. The truth is, I long for some of this mystery as it empowers us to make moves and follow the paths of uncertainty, and honestly, it just makes life a hell of a lot more fun!
So, what exactly would my life look like in a different decade? I would without a doubt have fewer anxieties, less distrust of people and more faith in society. Actual verbal phone telephone conversations would replace the misconstrued text messages. Beautiful hardcover books would replace the kindle or the iPad. Best of all, the simple freedoms of life would replace the worry and suspicion concerning our world.
