At 6.1 feet and 230 pounds, Leonard Fournette cannot be stopped. Coming out of high school, Fournette was ranked as the number 1 overall recruit in the 2014 senior class according to ESPN, 247Sports.com, and CBS Sports. He has not disappointed.
As only a sophomore, Fournette has already shown his worth and broken records. In the October 10th game against South Caroline, Fournette snatched the title of being the fastest LSU player to rush 1,000 yards in one season, accomplishing this after only 5 games.
With his help, the Tigers went on to beat South Carolina 45-24, but the victory was bittersweet. Since the game had to be played in Death Valley due to tragic flooding in South Carolina, Fournette wanted to give back to the victims. Because he and his family were personal survivors of Hurricane Katrina, Fournette understood what these people were going through and wanted to help. To raise money for the flood victims, Fournette will auction off his South Carolina game day jersey.
After the game, he told reporters, “I want to send my prayers, condolences and empathy to the people of South Carolina. What they are going through reminds me of what my people in New Orleans went through 10 years ago with Hurricane Katrina. We played a game today, but the people in South Carolina right now are in need."
Fournette's thoughtful actions, in the wake of this tragedy, reflect his message of "BUGA" nation.
Across campus, especially in the stadium on game days, you will see fans holding up this symbolic b, but most people don't know what it means.
Not only has Fournette proven to be a class act off the field, his athletic abilities will go down in history. According to Sports Illustrated, "Fournette has averaged more than 200 yards per game and has scored 12 of his team's 22 touchdowns this season."
According to Vice Sports, if he were to enter the NFL draft tomorrow, (which he is ineligible to do) he would be a first-round draft pick.
Fournette is also predicted to win the 2015 Heisman trophy.
I admit, I don't always make it into the games, and I definitely don't know all the players, but I know who Fournette is, and you should too.
Every LSU student needs to watch this man play at least once before he's gone. His character and talent are special, so don't miss the opportunity to watch a truly great player make history at our school.
In case you haven't seen him play.....
Fournette, be my friend.
