After 10 seasons of The Voice, a female coach finally won on Tuesday, May 24. Christina Aguilera is one of the original coaches on the show, making it only fair that she be the first female to bring home the win with former-child actress, Alisan Porter. Known for her role as Curly Sue when she was 10, Porter has always had a passion for singing and has waited 30 years to be where she is now.
"I have retired from Curly Sue, I am now the girl who won The Voice! I've waited 30 something years..." Alisan said backstage, according to People Magazine.
In February, she audition for The Voice with Roy Orbison's 'Blue Bayou,' earning herself a four-chair turn and standing ovation from Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and coach Christina Aguilera.
She then went on to battle Lacy Mandingo with 'California Dreamin','' where she moved on to sing 'River' by Joni Mitchell in the Knockout Rounds. In the Live Playoffs, Porter wailed out 'Cry Baby,' continuing forward to sing 'Stone Cold,' 'Stay with Me Baby,' 'Let Him Fly' and 'Cryin'' in the lives. For the semifinals, she belted out The Eagles' 'Desperado,' and for the finale, she poured her heart in to three songs: 'Somewhere' from West Side Story, a duet with her coach, 'You've Got A Friend,' and her original song, 'Down That Road.'
Porter's journey on The Voice was a true showcase of talent. The mother of two was also very open about her past troubles with alcohol and was always humbled on the show, wanting to bring awareness to addiction and help others find sobriety.
For the past five years, only male judges have been winning: Shelton with four wins, Levine with three, Usher with one, Williams with one, and now Aguilera has one as well. Team Xtina came close to winning in season 5 with 16-year-old Jacquie Lee, but came in second to Team Adam's Tessanne Chin. It has always been a 3:1 ratio of male to female coaches, making the odds in favor for the men to win, but next season there will be two women: Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys, alongside Levine and Shelton.
“To be honest, I can’t thank Alisan enough for choosing me as her coach,” Aguilera told Parade.comat a press conference after the Season 10 finale. “I was so moved and touched by her story from the minute I turned around at the Blind Auditions. She has been a blessing to not only me but to the show. She is the epitome of 'The Voice,' and also an inspiration to other hardworking moms and any hardworking parent who also has a dream they want to accomplish.”
It became apparent towards the end of the season that Porter and Aguilera would be friends for not only the duration of the show, but long after, with their bountiful hugs, "Love you girl!"s and when the two sang, 'You've Got A Friend,' together.
Hopefully this is the first in many-to-come female coach wins on The Voice.
