A Letter To The Struggling College Student

Being in college everyone knows what the daily "struggle" is (some of us more than others). EVERYTHING in college is so expensive. It feels like at times we have to pay to literally breathe. One thing college has taught me is to ball on a budget and not blow my money because you never know when you have to pay for an unexpected fine.

Speaking of fines. You go to campus two hours before class starts in fear of being late and not having a parking spot. So what do you do when you can't find a parking spot? You pay for visitors parking because you are desperate and need to get to class on time. But, keep in mind when you forget to pay the meter– you're left with a little orange note. The dreadful orange note called a ticket.

The next thing you come across with being a struggling college student is FOOD! We all love to eat. But, why is the food cost on campus so expensive? You go to Chick Fil A on campus and you spend more on your eight count chicken nugget meal than you would go to the actual Chick Fil A?! This blows my mind that University believes we are all just made of money.

Speaking from experience I would say we are the poorest people in town. Literally, we are lucky to be able to afford a decent meal sometimes. But, I can say if I am not able to get a decent meal–I would blame it on my Starbucks addiction. (Sorry Mom for not eating my veggies!)

Yes, some of us are blessed with having parents who help us financially. They are there to support our financial means. But, I wish there was a break down for parents about how much we spend unknowingly at our University. Yes, I know not everyone knows what the "struggle" is because all of our situations are different. But, if you do know the struggle and can relate then you feel my pain.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
