College. The 'time of our lives,' filled with parties, late night snacking and no one telling you what to do. After a few weeks of living off of sugar, caffeine and limited sleep you may begin to realize you aren't at your best. Being on your own and no longer having a high school sport to keep you active or your parents keeping you in check doesn't mean you have to let yourself fall victim to the Freshman 15. Here are a few tips to avoid that unwanted weight.
1. Sleep
The average person needs at least 8 hours of sleep a night. I know, I know, college is stressful and you have to write five papers and do two projects and still go out with friends because you have a case of #FOMO, but remember to take care of yourself first.
2. Prioritize
Don't procrastinate. Instead of sleeping until your 12:00 class get up early for some breakfast and have a quick workout so it's out of the way. Starting your day early gives you a chance to get a jumpstart on what you need to get done and allows you to have more free time in the evening so you can go out with friends (or binge watch some Netflix) and no longer have to worry about finishing that paper that's due at midnight.
3. Explore your options
Working out doesn't mean running for miles and miles. It doesn't have to be something you despise. There are so many ways to be active, whether its going on a walk and exploring campus or taking a class at the gym. A workout can be more than weights and cardio, you can make it fun you just have to look for new ways.
4. Get a buddy
On those days when you just really don't want to go, having a buddy to hold you accountable is a blessing in disguise. You may be annoyed with them in the moment, but your body will thank you later. And as a bonus having someone to talk to will help the time pass faster!
5. Watch what you eat
Yes, the caf closes at 8 p.m. and sometimes you aren't hungry until 9 p.m., but heading to the vending machine for a quick pre-bedtime snack isn't the right answer. Go to the grocery store and stock up on some healthy snacks. I know it isn't exciting but fruits, veggies and nuts will make you feel better than potato chips or candy ever will.
6. Work with what you've got
Being able to eat pizza, hamburgers and cookies for every meal might not sound like the worst thing, but it isn't the best for you. Finding healthy options in the cafeteria can be difficult, but knowing what to look for helps. Try finding ways to eat salad, meat, fruits and vegetables and try limiting your carbs and sweets.
7. Go
Lots of people find the gym intimidating and are hesitant to go because they think it is full of "strong attractive men" or "skinny girls" and they feel out of place. That's not true though. The gym is a place for people to go to work on themselves. There are plenty of people who have no idea what they are doing when they go, but they are there and that makes all the difference.
8. Stick with it
Results don't happen overnight. It takes time and consistency, but the more you exercise the better you will feel, not only your body but your mind too. Good things come in time, so don't give up and remember YOU CAN DO IT!
