Flashback to June of 2007, we've got a killer starting line up of the still new LeBron James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas (aka "Z") and Drew Gooden, looking like a solid team on the court. We were just coming off beating Detroit in Game 6, landing the Eastern Conference title. We were up to play the San Antonio Spurs for a shot at a championship. However, in just four games, that dream quickly faded away.
Now, flashback to last summer. King James had returned home, although K Love was benched and Kyrie was injured, we'd had a fantastic trio once again out there on the court. We'd just swept the Hawks in four games, coming off a great high with the Eastern Conference title once again. We made it. We had another shot. Kyrie was out, but Dellavedova stepped up out of nowhere, and we had two wins under our belt. However, LeBron James couldn't carry a team alone, and we lost three games in a row and another NBA Finals.
Now all fans with any sort of loyalties to the city of Cleveland are holding their breath because here we are again. We've got a shot. But all of us are having the same thoughts during this playoff season. And we're all praying we walk away with a different outcome.
1. Don't get hurt.
Although everyone thinks The Cavs = LeBron, it really was the case last year during the playoffs. With Kevin Love out with a shoulder injury from Game 4 vs. the Boston Celtics, and Kyrie Irving suffering off and on throughout the playoffs with injuries, it was a major setback for the team. However, we currently have our entire trio off the bench (knock on wood), and we're all praying it stays that way.
2. Bandwagon Fans/Fair Weather Fans...
There's no sugarcoating it. Being a Cleveland sports fan can be very rough, but the real fans have stuck by their team. For Cavs fans, we've stuck by this team in 2007 when they made their last run at the finals, in the dark years while LeBron was living it up in Miami, when he returned and now that they have a shot at the title for the second year in a row. Seeing a fan that is just now taking interest because we have been successful is extremely aggravating. This doesn't just apply to Cavs fans, I'm sure it's just as annoying seeing people walking around in Steph Curry jerseys when they couldn't even tell you what position he plays.
3. Delly?
Last year, out of nowhere, the scrappy Australian, Matthew Dellavedova, shocked us all by being a key player for the team during the finals. We hadn't really played much attention to Delly before this, but after we all saw him step up, No. 8 jerseys were flying off the shelves. Now, all of the fans are wondering if Delly or any other of the less hyped up players are going to have a similar streak of stardom during the playoffs.
4. It's not all about LeBron.
Anyone who's ever turned on ESPN knows that LeBron is good, LeBron is a big deal and you could probably play a fun drinking game watching ESPN for 15 minutes taking shots every time he's mentioned. However, one player can't carry a team. Many fans find it aggravating that everyone dismisses the rest of our players and attributes our success to King James. As we saw last year, a player can only carry a team so far. Most are aware of the talents of Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving, Love currently leading the team in rebounds and Irving leading in points during this postseason; however, the talents of J.R. Smith and Tristian Thompson, who both start for the Cavs, are often overshadowed. Most recently, Channing Frye has been giving everyone a run for their money, and all of the fans are really excited about having him in a Cavs jersey.
5. Don't get cocky.
We are doing really well. We just set an NBA record for most 3's in a game. We have players that are not only very talented, but are working really well together. We are a good team, and we have a shot. However, we can't get too comfortable because of these things. A title like they one we're making a run for isn't something given to those who have big heads and walk onto the court overly confident in their abilities. We have to stay humble and aware of our talents with the mindset that we can do it, but we can't just assume we're going to make it. We've gotta earn it.
6. We miss you, Anderson.
If it ends up being between us and Golden State, it makes it very bittersweet seeing our own Anderson Varejao return to the Q in the finals, but not in wine and gold. However, if we do end up in the finals, and it is with the Warriors, and it doesn't go our way, it'll be a little better because Varejao deserves a championship.
7. Steph Curry.
Much like LeBron, Curry gets a lot of hype. Nobody who pays attention to the NBA will ever say that this hype and amazement of Curry is misplaced, though. He's an incredible athlete that led his team to a huge win last year and an incredible record this year. However, you can't build a team around one player, no matter how talented that player is. Cavs fans saw this firsthand last year when we had to center our entire team around LeBron, so we're going to have to see how this effects Golden State in the finals. Personally, I'm very excited to see Curry play because his talent will make everyone strive to play better. I think everyone is also very excited for more interviews with his adorable daughter—who's the real star there?
8. The Spurs.
A team that was out very early in the finals last year now has an impressive record and has a very clear shot at winning the Western Conference, and possibly the whole thing. If you had told anyone last year that the Spurs were going to be the team to watch just one year later, you'd surprise many. But if it ends up being San Antonio and the Cavs in the finals, we're all a little too afraid of having a flashback to 2007 when we were swept by the Spurs in four games. Hopefully, they'll be room for redemption, even if it is nine years too late.
Overall, the main thought on all Cavs fans minds, fair weather fans or not, is that we're all extremely grateful and excited that we might have another chance at this title. Lord knows we've worked hard for it.
