During the winter and spring, many people will go out and try out winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. I have been skiing since I was three years old and moved into snowboarding a few years ago. One of the things I have noticed over the years that many people wear helmets, and many people do not. In this article, I am supposed to show the reasons why you shouldn't wear a helmet on the mountain, when in fact there are none.
There are no reasons why someone shouldn't wear a helmet.
No matter how experienced you are in snow sports, you will still fall. Especially snowboarders, they spend half of their time on the ground post-fall. Even in Olympic sports, you see the most talented skiers and snowboarders in the world wearing helmets, so if they're wearing them why shouldn't you?
It doesn't matter if you want to be the "cool kid" and not wear a helmet, even a minor injury can cause massive brain damage. In fact, Liam Neeson's late wife, Natasha Richardson died in a skiing accident back in 2009. Richardson was on a green run, which is the easiest rating of a run, with a ski instructor when she fell over while going down. She laughed off the fall and got back up and went back to her room. Later that afternoon, Richardson was admitted to the hospital for brain injuries, and later died because of them.
Not wearing a helmet while skiing or snowboarding is just plain stupid. People who avoid wearing helmets do not look "cooler" than those who do wear helmets, and those who wear helmets don't look like "losers." If it is style you're worried about instead of your safety, then you should probably reevaluate your priorites.
If this winter is your first time going out and trying out skiing or snowboarding please wear a helmet. The repercussions of a minor fall are not worth it. Even if you're not concerned about your safety, your family is. Wear the helmet not for you, but for the people who care so much about you.
