Living in northern Mississippi, I have had to find things to do in my surrounding areas. One place that I love to go is Memphis, Tennessee. There are a lot of cheap or free things to do in and around Memphis. From looking out over the river to Levitt Shell, there are plenty of over things do to. Here are some of my favorites:
1. Going to a Memphis Redbirds game
The Memphis Redbirds are one of the many sports teams that reside in Memphis. They are the minor league ball team for the St. Louis Cardinals. All it takes is maybe $10/person and it's always a great game!
2. Visiting The Pink Palace Museum
I've been here several times and I've always enjoyed the exhibits. Many of them are centralized to the Mid-South area and its history. Tickets for an adult are $12.75 for the exhibits only and it's well worth the money.
3. Getting a snow cone from Jerry's
Everybody from Memphis or surrounding areas has heard of Jerry's. They are a legend here in Memphis. They have snow cones like no other snow cone place I've tried! This is a highly recommended spot here in Memphis. A large "Supreme" (with ice cream in the middle) snow cone is around six bucks.
4. "Touring" Mud Island
Home to the famous Mud Island Amphitheater, Mud Island also hosts many magnificent homes and apartments. These can all be seen for free, either by walking or driving. Mud Island also has fishing docks and a walking trail, where you can catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Mississippi Bridge at night.
5. Seeing the world's largest Bass Bro Shops
This is the largest Bass Pro Shop in the world and can be seen completely free of charge. The ground floor has "ponds" that store living fish such as catfish, sturgeon, and trout. You can also eat at Uncle Buck's Restaurant and go bowling while eating. They also have a top floor (as seen in the picture) where you can see the entire city of Memphis for only $10.
6. Walking down the famous Beale Street
This is entirely free to do; the only thing you would have to pay for is parking, which you can find super cheap anywhere downtown. Beale Street is home to great restaurants, sights, and sounds. It is also a national registered landmark. Of course, if you want to eat or shop, you might want to bring a few extra dollars.
7. Eating a Gibson's Donuts donut
Another great Memphis treat that is very reasonably priced! Once again, most Memphians know about the quality of Gibson's Donuts. They are very tasty and even sell huge donuts. Many nights, Gibson's lines are so long, you have to stand outside in the line just to get the donut of your choice.
These are just some of the fun things to do in Memphis, which happen to be some of my favorites. These are great for family outings, super cheap dates, or just a fun Saturday event. If you ever visit Memphis, or live around the area, be sure to do one of these seven fun, cheap things and you're in for a great day!
