The time of year that everyone looks forward to has finally arrived—summer! It’s time to lounge by the pool, take hiking trips, and spend time with friends. But just because it’s summer doesn’t mean that it’s time to be lazy about your health and fitness. Here are a few tips on how to stay healthy this summer.
1. Watch what you drink.
Many people forget that certain drinks are packed with sugary calories. One can of soda has over 150 calories, and a small Frappuccino at Starbucks has over 300 calories. This summer, try to limit yourself to sugary drinks once or twice a week. Don’t make a habit of ordering soda at every meal. Set aside certain days or occasions that you will treat yourself to a margarita or iced coffee. This will help you avoid consuming unnecessary calories at every meal.
2. Plan ahead for road trips.
Road trips are always an exciting and fun part of summer. However, it’s very easy to pig out during these long drives. Rather than stopping at McDonald's or Wendy’s, plan ahead! Instead of eating a burger at a fast food restaurant, pack a healthy salad or sandwich. You can also snack on carrots and hummus, fresh fruit, and pita chips. The key to this is planning ahead. Before going on your road trip, stop at the grocery store and pick up healthy snacks for the long drive.
3. Make a workout schedule.
Although summer is supposed to be about relaxing, the reality is that many of us are busy with summer jobs or internships. Since summer vacation can be hectic and stressful, it’s important to make a workout schedule. In other words, set aside a certain time each week that is dedicated to working out. It can be every Monday and Wednesday morning, or whenever you have time. But you have to be consistent! Write it down on your calendar or set alarms on your phone to remind yourself.
4. Beware of desserts.
Summer means ice cream, frozen yogurt, popsicles, and smoothies. Although these desserts are delicious, they are also high in calories and fat. This summer, make your own desserts rather than eating dessert out. Homemade popsicles can be healthy and tasty. Try using coconut water or almond milk as a base, and add fresh fruit to the mixture. Once hardened, drizzle dark chocolate over the popsicles for a sweet low-calorie treat.
5. Stay active.
Since the weather is finally nice, stay active outside this summer. Plan a hiking trip with your friends, or go for a bike ride with your family. There are plenty of fun activities to do that can also burn a few calories and help you stay fit. Try playing soccer at the beach or swimming laps at your local pool. Exercise doesn’t have to be boring!
