In honor of Christmas. Here are the five greatest moments in Sports History that occurred on Christmas Day!
5. NHL Ends its holiday Tradition
Beginning in the 1920s, there was an NHL game every Christmas Day, up until 1971. Where the NHL decided to end the 50+ year tradition, so it could give their players a small holiday break. On the final day, six games were played and the last goal ever scored on Christmas Day came courtesy of Stan Gilbertson, as his California Golden Seals beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-1.
4. Phil Jackson Records His 1,000 Win
On Christmas Day 2008, the Phil Jackson-led Lakers took on the hated Boston Celtics. While the matchup was already mouth-watering based on the history the teams share, but also this was the first time the historic franchises met since the Celtics beat the Lakers for the 2008 NBA championship a few months before. The icing on the cake was watching the Zen-master, Phil Jackson, becoming the fastest coach to 1000 wins.
3.The First Women to play in a Major-Division College Game
During the 2002 SEGA Sports Las Vegas Bowl Katie Hnida became the first women to play in a NCAA Division I-A game, college footballs highest level of play, sadly she was unable to score after her extra-point attempt was blocked. She also went on to become the first women to score in a Division I-A game in 2003 in a 72-8 blowout of Texas State University.

1971 makes another appearance on the list! With the first ever Christmas to air an NFL game. Quickly became the last. When the Chiefs and Dolphins met at 4 p.m. ET, on Christmas history was about to be made. The game took 3 hours and 21 minutes to complete. After the teams went into double-overtime in the AFC divisional playoffs. With Miami’s kicker, Garo Yepremeian, finally giving the Dolphins the win.
