The 2015 college football bowl season kicks off this Friday, and with a record 40 bowl games being played this year, it will run through Jan. 11, when a new national champion will be crowned. In the second year of the College Football Playoff, three new teams enter the Playoff bracket (Clemson, Oklahoma and Michigan State) with Alabama being the lone returning team from last year's playoff.

The 2015 season came with some surprises, as teams like Georgia Tech and UCF wildly underachieved and teams like Temple and Florida surprised many and finished in the Top 25. New faces like Tom Herman graced the sidelines this season, while we also said goodbye to a few long time coaches whose careers came to a close this year (Steve Spurrier, Frank Beamer, and George O'Leary). With 40 bowl games on this seasons slate, three teams with a losing record snuck into the postseason, while one bowl game will feature a match-up between two opponents from the same conference! Without further ado, lets dive into the bowl games for interesting facts as well as predictions:

Gildan New Mexico Bowl:

Arizona (6-6) vs. New Mexico (7-5), Dec. 19

For the first time since 2007, the New Mexico Lobos are going bowling. They will face off in the New Mexico Bowl against rival Arizona Wildcats. In a de facto home game for the Lobos, they will match up against an Arizona team that didn't play up to expectations (coming off a 10-4 season last year), but the Wildcats will look to finish the season off with a win and a winning record. Prediction: Arizona over New Mexico, 38-20

One of the underrated games this bowl season is the Las Vegas Bowl matchup between in-state rivals Brigham Young (BYU) and the University of Utah. Utah started out red hot this season, being ranked in the top four for a couple weeks before dropping three games, and BYU quietly put together another great season. For the first time, Holy War/Battle for the Beehive Boot will be decided in a bowl game. Even better, the two historically conservative schools will take place in the shadows of Sin City! Prediction: Utah over BYU, 33-27

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl

Ohio (8-4) vs. Appalachian State (10-2), Dec. 19

In just their second year of playing football at the FBS level, Appalachian State managed to rattle off a 10 win season, with their only loses being on the road against the #1 and undefeated Clemson and a home loss to Sun Belt conference champion Arkansas State. Mid American stalwart Ohio finished off their season 8-4 and look forward to traveling to Alabama for their December bowl game. This is the second year that the Camellia Bowl will host a bowl game. Prediction: Ohio over App. State, 27-24 in overtime

AutoNation Cure Bowl

San Jose State (5-7) vs. Georgia State (6-6), Dec. 19

When AutoNation decided to sponsor the first ever Cure Bowl in Orlando this bowl season, I'm sure they were hoping for a better match-up than this dumpster fire. In one of the worst bowl games this season (and arguably, one of the worst of all time) the San Jose State Spartans (with a losing record) will play 6-6 Georgia State, a team in its third year playing FBS level football and also a team that lost at home to an FCS level opponent. Yuck. Prediction: San Jose State over Georgia State, 31-23

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

Arkansas State (9-3) vs. Louisiana Tech(8-4), Dec. 19

Another underrated match-up this bowl season featuring two mid-major powerhouses. Sun Belt champion Arkansas State is riding an eight game winning streak into what should be a crowded Superdome to take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Both teams have high-powered, up-tempo offenses that should make for an exciting game. Prediction, Arkansas State over La. Tech, 48-41

Miami Beach Bowl

Western Kentucky (11-2) vs. USF (8-4), Dec. 21

Conference USA champions Western Kentucky will take their talents to South Beach on the 21st to take on the South Florida Bulls, who are playing in their first bowl game since 2010. The Hilltoppers and the Bulls will be hard-pressed to top last year's game, where Memphis narrowly edged BYU to win the game before a post-game brawl broke out between the two squads. I don't think we'll see that kind of intensity this year, but WKU will look to cap off one of its best seasons of all time. Prediction: WKU over USF, 51-34

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Akron (7-5) vs. Utah State (6-6), Dec. 22

I don't know how "famous" this year's game will be, given the two participants squaring off on the 22^nd in Boise. The Akron Zips will be playing in their second ever bowl game (first since 2005) and will look to win their first bowl game since joining the FBS level in 1987. The Utah State Aggies will be playing in their fifth consecutive bowl game in front of what should be a mostly sparse, but pro-Aggie crowd. Prediction: Utah State over Akron 30-20

Marmot Boca Raton Bowl

Toledo (9-2) vs. 24.Temple (10-3), Dec. 22

In the second rendition of the Boca Raton Bowl (sponsored by whatever the hell 'Marmot' is), the Toledo Rockets will face off against the nationally ranked Temple Owls. Both teams highly overachieved this year, with Toledo winning nine games, including road wins over the SEC's Arkansas and the Big 12's Iowa State. The Toledo Rockets look to have double digit wins in a season for just the fifth time in school history, but will have to do so without former head coach Matt Campbell, who left Toledo after an incredible four year run to take the head coaching position at Iowa State. On the opposite side is the Temple Owls, who are in the midst of arguably their greatest season in school history. With 10 wins for just the second time in school history, the Owls look to cap off a historic 2015 with a win in the Boca Raton Bowl, which would mark the winningest season in Temple football history. Prediction: Temple over Toledo, 34-28

San Diego County CU Poinsettia Bowl

Boise State (8-4) vs. NIU (8-5), Dec. 23

Before the College Football Playoff, we had the BCS system, and in the BCS system "Group of 5," teams did not get an automatic bid to the BCS/New Year's 6 Bowl Games. Only three teams from the "Group of 5" conferences ever made it to BCS bowl games, and two of them are Boise State and NIU. This should be an interesting matchup between two mid-major powers that slightly underachieved this year: NIU's schedule had fans hoping of a 10 win season, while Boise State is in the midst of its worst season since the late 1990s. Both teams want the win to salvage their season, but only one can come out on top. Prediction: Boise State over NIU, 37-24

GoDaddy Bowl

Georgia Southern (8-4) vs. Bowling Green (10-3), Dec. 23

For the first time in years it seems, the GoDaddy Bowl will have two quality opponents squaring off. The Eagles of Georgia Southern look to win a bowl game in their first year of eligibility since joining the FBS ranks. This is a GSU team that demolished Florida at home two years ago and took Georgia into overtime this year. On the opposing side are the Falcons of Bowling Green. BGSU has picked up another conference title this year and would like to add to the successful season by notching an 11^th win, but will have to do so without former head coach Dino Babers, who left to take the head job at Syracuse. Bowling Green's spread attack can put up a lot of points, but Georgia Southern runs the triple option, which stymies many opponents and allows the Eagles to strike at any time. Prediction: GSU over BGSU, 37-34

Popeyes Bahamas Bowl

Middle Tennessee (7-5) vs. Western Michigan (7-5), Dec. 24

Christmas Eve kicks off in Nassau in the Bahamas as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders taken on the Broncos of Western Michigan. If nothing else, this game is interesting to watch just for the aspect of seeing a football game on an island in the Bahamas. Neither of these teams have had particularly remarkable seasons. MTSU looks to win a third bowl game, while Western Michigan plays in a second consecutive bowl game as their coach P.J. Fleck continues to draw interest from bigger programs. Both teams are come in with seven wins and are balanced on offense and defense. Prediction: WMU over MTSU, 34-23

Hawai'i Bowl

San Diego State (10-3) vs. Cincinnati (7-5), Dec. 24

Christmas Eve is full of football festivities from exotic locales, as the San Diego State Aztecs take on Cincinnati at Aloha Stadium In Hawai'i. The 10-3 Aztecs are looking to win 11 games after winning their first outright conference championship in almost 30 years. The Bearcats of Cincinnati look to regroup after a disappointing season in which they were predicted to be at or near the top of their conference. The Aztecs (who have a large Naval fan base) should have plenty of fans in Hawai'i to watch them take on Cincinnati. Prediction: SDSU over Cincinnat, 33-28

St. Petersburg Bowl

UConn (6-6) vs. Marshall (9-3), Dec. 26

An interesting match-up as UConn and Marshall have very contrasting styles of play. The Huskies of UConn play a tough defensive game under second year coach Bob Diaco, while the Marshall Thundering Herd play an up-tempo, offensive-oriented game. The Huskies look to win their first bowl game in six years while the Herd try to win their fourth in five years. Prediction: Marshall over UConn, 41-21

Hyundai Sun Bowl

Miami (FL) (8-4) vs. Washington State (8-4), Dec. 26

Both Miami and Wazzou will try to cap off their best seasons in quite some time with a win in the Sun Bowl. Expect plenty of points to be scored here as QB Brad Kaaya and the Miami Hurricanes look to work the spread as best they can, while coach Mike Leach will lead the Cougars of WSU and try to outscore the 'Canes with his air raid offense. Prediction: Miami over Washington State, 41-31

Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl

Washington (6-6) vs. Southern Miss (9-4), Dec. 26

The Washington Huskies barely squeaked into a bowl game with a victory of Washington State in the final week of the regular season. Southern Miss is back at championship level this season after winning just three games over the past three seasons. Both teams will look to finish off their season with a win in Dallas. Prediction: Southern Miss over Washington, 33-30

New Era Pinstripe Bowl

Indiana (6-6) vs. Duke (7-5), Dec. 26

Two blueblood basketball schools will face off in a college football bowl game that will be played in an MLB baseball stadium? How about that for a story line. Indiana is bowl-eligible for the first time since 2007, while Duke will be playing in its fourth consecutive bowl game after playing in only two since 1985. Historically, these are two of the worst programs in division one college football. Who will come out on top? Prediction: Duke over Indiana 37-28

Camping World Independence Bowl

Tulsa (6-6) vs. Virginia Tech (6-6), Dec. 26

Virginia Tech will face Tulsa in what will be coach Frank Beamer's last season as the head man at VT. After 29 seasons, the coach will call it a day after the final whistle blows on Dec. 26. The Hokies will be playing in their 23^rd consecutive bowl game, the longest current streak in division one football. They will look to send their winningest coach out with a victory over a Tulsa team that is back in a bowl game after missing out last season. Prediction: Virginia Tech over Tulsa, 27-23

Foster Farms Bowl

UCLA (8-4) vs. Nebraska (5-7), Dec. 26

Two of the more storied programs in college football history will square off in strange circumstances in the Foster Farms Bowl. UCLA finished the season in an all-too-familiar fashion, falling to USC by a wide margin in a game that, had they won, would've put them in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Instead, the Bruins fell to 8-4, ending the season in an early bowl game after early season hype that they may be a CFP dark horse. Nebraska will play in a bowl game despite going 5-7, one of the worst records in team history. This might be the best team to finish a season with a losing record, however, as Nebraska lost six games by a touchdown or less (losing three in OT or on the final play of the game) and held a lead in many of those games with little time left. Which program will come out more motivated to win? Prediction: UCLA over Nebraska, 34-31

Military Bowl

Pittsburgh (8-4) vs. 21. Navy (10-2), Dec. 28

Another game pitting two overachievers against each other, the Military Bowl features a 10-win Navy team facing a Pittsburgh team that nearly played in the ACC Championship game. Navy will be motivated to win this game, as it is the Military Bowl and it will be played at their home stadium. Will that motivation be enough to overcome the talent on the Pitt team? Prediction: Navy over Pitt, 30-24

Quick Lane Bowl

Central Michigan (7-5) vs. Minnesota (5-7), Dec. 28

The Quick Lane Bowl features the last five winning team to be invited to a bowl game in 5-7 Minnesota. The five winning Golden Gophers will look to end the season on a high note with a bowl win for their former coach, Jerry Kill, who was forced to resign this season due to medical concerns. Their opponent is 7-5 Central Michigan, who will look to win another bowl game as this MAC power has gotten accustomed to postseason success. Prediction: Minnesota over Central Michigan, 35-21

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl

California (7-5) vs. Air Force (8-5), Dec. 29

The Armed Forces Bowl will feature the California Golden Bears, in their return to winning fashion, pitted up against the Air Force Falcons, again achieving success with few resources under coach Troy Calhoun. Sonny Dykes' Cal team will try to outscore the Falcons using the air raid offense. Calhoun's Falcons (who participated in their first Mountain West Championship Game) will look to ground the Bears using the triple option offense. It should be an interesting game of run vs. pass. Prediction: California over Air Force 48-24

Russell Athletic Bowl

10. North Carolina (11-2) vs. 17. Baylor (9-3), Dec. 29

If Baylor backup QB Jarrett Stidham is back in time for the Russell Athletic Bowl, look out. The Baylor Bears (who looked to be cruising towards a spot in the College Football Playoff before injuries derailed their season) tote one of the most high powered offenses in the country. Their opponent, the North Carolina Tarheels, have undergone a revival under coach Larry Fedora and also sport one of the nation's premier offenses. When these teams face off in late December, it may be a game of who has the ball last that wins the game. Prediction: UNC over Baylor 49-38

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl

Nevada (6-6) vs. Colorado State (7-5), Dec. 29

In one of the more curious games this bowl season, Mountain West Conference members Nevada and Colorado State will face each other in the Arizona Bowl. Neither team had a particularly great season, though Colorado State has been red hot lately, and it'll be interesting to see Nevada back in the bowl schedule. Prediction: Colorado State over Nevada, 31-20

AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl

20. LSU (8-3) vs. Texas Tech (7-5), Dec. 29

The Mad Hatter will be on the sideline to coach the LSU Tigers in the Texas Bowl after weeks of speculation said that coach Miles would be out after the regular season. The Texas Bowl features an LSU team that was once 7-0 but dropped three straight games and nearly got its coached fired before rebounding in the season finale against Texas A&M. LSU also features one of the top RBs in the nation in Leonard Fournette. Their opponent is the Texas Tech Red Raiders, who can score at will on opponents but play little to no defense and have one of the worst rush defenses in the country. Prediction: LSU over TTU, 38-30

Birmingham Bowl

Auburn (6-6) vs. Memphis (9-3), Dec. 30

One of the great disappointments of the 2015 college football season will square off against one of the great turnaround teams in the 2015 edition of the Birmingham Bowl. The Auburn Tigers were a preseason top 10 team and a favorite to win the SEC and play in the College Football Playoff. They finished the season 6-6, dead last in the SEC West, and needed OT to beat an FCS opponent. The Memphis Tigers, on the other hand, are looking to score their second consecutive 10 win season, something that has never been done in program history. Memphis also handedly beat Ole Miss, a team that squashed Auburn, in the regular season. Coach Justin Fuente of Memphis is heading to Virginia Tech after this game, while Gus Malzahn of Auburn might be on the hot seat just two years removed from playing for a national championship. How much hotter would that seat become with a loss here? Prediction: Memphis over Auburn 43-37 in OT

Belk Bowl

NC State (7-5) vs. Mississippi State (8-4), Dec. 30

The Belk Bowl will be farewell for Dak Prescott, the winning quarterback in Mississippi State history and one of the alltime great players in the SEC. His Bulldogs will go up against NC State in Charlotte in what will probably be a hostile environment for the Bulldogs. NC State is looking to win an eighth game this season, although its 2015 campaign was incredibly soft (the Wolfpack only played four teams with a winning record and lost to all four of them, meanwhile going 7-1 against teams with a losing record) a win over MSU might prove that NC State isn't a joke. Prediction: MSU 48-31 over NC State

Franklin Amer. Mort. Music City Bowl

Texas A&M (8-4) vs. Louisville (7-5), Dec. 30

The Music City Bowl will be an interesting early bowl game to watch as Bobby Petrino and the Louisville Cardinal take on Kevin Sumlin and the Texas A&M Aggies. The teams had polar opposite seasons, with A&M starting out red hot before losing several games to end the season, while it looked like Louisville might not even be bowl eligible to start the year before they put together an impressive string of victories. Which team will salvage its streaky season on the 30th? Prediction: Texas A&M over Louisville, 34-30

Holiday Bowl

25. USC (8-5) vs. Wisconsin (9-3), Dec. 30

In one of the premier match-ups of the bowl season to take place before Dec. 31, the storied USC Trojans will square off against another historic program, Wisconsin, in the Holiday Bowl. The Trojans started out the season slow (and dealt with a slew of off the field issues) before their head coach was fired in the middle of the season. Since then, interim (and recently named permanent) head coach Clay Helton has led USC to a string of victories and clinched the Pac-12 South with a big win over rival UCLA. Meanwhile, Wisconsin has quietly put together a nice nine win season. Will the Wisconsin run game be enough to take down the men of Troy? Prediction: USC over Wisconsin, 38-31

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

18. Houston (12-1) vs. 9. Florida State (10-2), Dec. 31

* New Year's Six Bowl Game*

In the first New Year's 6 Bowl Game of the 2015 season, the Florida State Seminoles will look to defeat the Houston Cougars. This is the first time in three seasons the 'Noles won't be in the hunt for a national championship, and this is the first time the Houston Cougars will compete in a New Year's Six Bowl Game. Will FSU come wanting to play, or will a motivated Houston team upset the 'Noles who aren't interested in a consolation game? Prediction: FSU over Houston, 41-31

Capital One Orange Bowl

4. Oklahoma (11-1) vs. 1. Clemson (13-0), Dec. 31

*New Year's Six Bowl Game*

** College Football Playoff Semifinal Game**

The first semifinal game for the 2015 College Football Playoff is sure to be a barnburner as the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Clemson Tigers in the Orange Bowl. Both teams are red hot as of late and feature two of the best offenses in the country. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops returns to the national title picture for the first time since being beaten soundly by Florida in 2009 while Clemson Coach Dabo Sweeney is looking for his first national title. Which QB will lead his team to victory, OU's Baker Mayfield or Clemson's Deshaun Watson? Prediction: Oklahoma over Clemson, 49-40

Goodyear Cotton Bowl

3. Michigan State (12-1) vs. 2. Alabama (12-1), Dec. 31

*New Year's Six Bowl Game*

** College Football Playoff Semifinal Game**

Where the Orange Bowl stands to be an offensive shootout, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl is the exact opposite. This semifinal features two of the very best defenses in college football in Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide team and Mark Dantonio's Michigan State Spartans. The two teams play a very similar defensive first style of play, run a similar offense dependent on a strong run game, and have each played a very difficult schedule. Dantonio is a former Saban coordinator and will look to upset his former mentor in what should be an alltime classic bout between two heavyweights. Prediction: Alabama over Michigan State, 30-27

Outback Bowl

13. Northwestern (10-2) vs. 23. Tennessee (8-4), Jan. 1

This year's Outback Bowl will feature two ranked teams who started out the season in very different situations. Northwestern was not expected to do much of anything this season, but started out with a bang in upsetting #6 and Pac-12 Champion Stanford. The Wildcats went 10-2 this season, only losing to Michigan and Iowa, two teams who finished the season ranked in the top 15. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Volunteers were a preseason top 25 team and favorites to win the SEC East. They started out the season 3-4 and before winning 5 straight and finishing out the season 8-4 and ranked 23^rd in a very weak SEC East. Prediction: Tennessee over Northwestern, 27-23

Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl

14. Michigan (9-3) vs. 19. Florida (10-3), Jan. 1

The Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl will feature two of the most improved programs of 2015. Last year, the Michigan Wolverines went 5-7 and didn't qualify for a bowl game. The Florida Gators went 6-5 in the regular season after finishing 4-8 the year before. This year, first year coaches Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and Jim McElwain at Florida have constructed two of the best defensive teams in the nation, and the two top 20 teams will face off in Orlando on New Year's Day. Will Florida be able to overcome a plethora of injuries on offense and score enough points to handle the Wolverines? Prediction: Michigan over Florida, 31-13

BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl

8. Notre Dame (10-2) vs. 7. Ohio State (11-1), Jan. 1

*New Year's Six Bowl Game*

This is flat out going to be one of the best bowl games in recent years. Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes will have a chip on their shoulder coming into this one, being so close to earning a second bid to the College Football Playoff. Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will want to knock off the defending national champions in a bout for the ages. Both teams are incredibly balanced and are strong on both sides of the ball. What will happen when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Prediction: Ohio State over Notre Dame, 33-31

Rose Bowl Game

6. Stanford (11-2) vs. 5. Iowa (12-1), Jan. 1

*New Year's Six Bowl Game*

The Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Alamo Bowl may not be your grandfather's brand of football, but this game sure is. This year's Rose Bowl features two teams with a throwback style of play based heavily on run first offense and strong defense. The "Granddaddy of 'Em All" will certainly live up to that moniker this year when the Iowa Hawkeyes square up against the Stanford Cardinal. Prediction: Stanford over Iowa, 27-20

Allstate Sugar Bowl

16. Oklahoma State (10-2) vs. 12. Ole Miss (9-3), Jan. 1

*New Year's Six Bowl Game*

The Allstate Sugar Bowl is another game that'll feature two fun offenses that should keep pumping points to the last second. Both Oklahoma State and Ole Miss seemed like CFP caliber teams during the season, but OSU dropped its last two games to finish 10-2 and Ole Miss just couldn't hold onto the momentum of beating Alabama and lost three games. With two spread offenses that work to perfection, this shootout should be a fun nightcap for January first. Prediction: Ole Miss over Oklahoma State, 42-38

TaxSlayer Bowl

Penn State (7-5) vs. Georgia (9-3), Jan. 2

The TaxSlayer Bowl will feature two perennial powers in Penn State and Georgia. Penn State started the season 7-2 before dropping its last three games. Georgia won nine games and finished second in the SEC East, but that was not enough for UGA coach Mark Richt to keep his job. Will James Franklin's Nittany Lions be motivated enough to play a complete game against the UGA Bulldogs? How will the Georgia players respond playing for a coach not named Mark Richt for the first time in 14 years? Prediction: Georgia over Penn State, 35-26

AutoZone Liberty Bowl

Kansas State (6-6) vs. Arkansas (7-5), Jan. 2

Two old school programs squaring off head-to-head in the last of the Big 12 vs. SEC bowl matchups. Arkansas finished strong after starting out the season falling victim to a couple upset loses, including a home loss to Toledo from the MAC. Kansas State looked like it wouldn't reach bowl eligibility for the majority of the season before winning its final games, including a one point win at West Virginia to end the season. With Bill Snyder getting older every season, the K-State players seem to keep this in mind and come up big for coach every year. Will this be Snyder's last game at KSU? And Bret Biellema's tenure at Arkansas has been a roller coaster at best. How will a loss to Kansas State and a 7-6 record look on the coach's resume? Which ground and pound team will be able to come up big when it counts? Prediction: Arkansas over Kansas State, 37-24

Valero Alamo Bowl

15. Oregon (9-3) vs. 11. TCU (10-2), Jan. 2

Prior to the start of the 2015 season, Oregon and TCU were both top 15 teams with aspirations of making it into the College Football Playoff. Oregon started out the season horribly, losing on the road to Michigan State, getting blown out at home by Utah, and finally losing to a Washington State team that had just lost to an FCS school weeks prior. After a slow start, Oregon has come on strong lately and finished as strong as any team, even upsetting the Pac-12 Champion Stanford. TCU was a top 5 team late into the season, before injuries crushed any hope they had of making it into the final four. Even with all their injuries, TCU still only lost two games, one to a very good Oklahoma State team and another on a failed two point conversion to Oklahoma. Offense should rule in this duel in the Alamodome. Prediction: Oregon over TCU 51-35

Motel 6 Cactus Bowl

West Virginia (7-5) vs. Arizona State (6-6), Jan. 2

In the final game of the bowl season before the national championship game are two very underwhelming squads in West Virginia and Arizona State. West Virginia played a very easy schedule with eight very winnable games and four games in which they should've at least competed for a W. Instead, WVU dropped one of the easy wins on their schedule and walked away from the four challenging games with zero wins, being beaten handedly in each game. Their opponent, Arizona State, limps in with their worst record in head coach Todd Graham's career at ASU. The ASU Sun Devils at least have the excuse of playing one of the more challenging schedules in the country, but still dropped games to schools like Cal and Washington State. Both teams come limping in without much desire to play, but the edge should go to ASU, who will be playing in front of mostly Sun Devils supporters. Prediction: Arizona State over West Virginia, 34-26

CFP National Championship

Semifinal Winner vs. Semifinal Winner, Jan. 11

According to my predictions, I have in this game Alabama (13-1) taking on Oklahoma (12-1).
