We've all been there: you decide to take a short break from your homework by watching a quick YouTube video, which turns into two videos, which turns into three, until before you know it, hours have passed.
Like Netflix, YouTube continues to feature wave upon wave of binge-worthy content. Between its genre-spanning channels and ever-growing crop of celebrity creators, it is cementing itself as a media staple and ushering in an online video revolution. With so much variety, it can be easy to be overwhelmed by it all. However, take it from someone who admittedly watches too much of it: there is so much incredible content out there to discover, and sometimes it's worth it just to sit back and sift through it all.
Over the years, I've browsed through many a recommended video and subscribed to many a channel. So, with that in mind, here are 20 of my most binge-able favorite channels, organized by genre. Be sure to like, share, subscribe, and swear undying fealty!
COMEDY
NerdyAndQuirky (Sabrina Cruz)
Sabrina proves that you're never too young to express your opinions or your uncanny sense of wit. Enthusiastic, socially conscious and just plain hilarious, her videos are always smart and creative.
TheThirdPew (Nathan Zed)
Another example of a young, socially conscious voice on YouTube, Nathan consistently strikes the balance between hard-hitting commentary and impeccable comedic timing. Seriously, his editing skills are in the stratosphere.
Practical Folks
One of my favorite channels to watch, period. Between their hilarious Drunk Disney series to their sketch comedy and television reviews, I cannot recommend them enough! (And yes, I did just link to a Christmas episode in August.)
Grace Helbig
You may recognize Grace Helbig as one of YouTube's most prominent celebrities, and there's a reason why: she's extremely funny! I'm particularly a fan of her awards show fashion reviews. Her delivery just gets to me.
MUSIC
I may be a bit more biased than usual towards the following four, as I saw them all on their Transatlantic Tour this past March. So, so good.
doddleoddle (Dodie Clark)
Besides being all-around sweet and honest in her vlogs, Dodie Clark is incredibly musically talented. Her original songs like "She," "Intertwined," and "Human" never fail to make me feel all the things and this song, "My Face," always makes me smile.
Rusty Clanton
Rusty's music is really charming, featuring an indie, Bob Dylan-esque vibe. I particularly love his most recent original song "Calm and Normal," and his covers of "Oo De Lally" and Dodie Clark's "Human."
Tessa Violet
Tessa's voice is very unique, also of the indie persuasion. Her original songs like "Make Me A Robot," "Bird Song," and "Sorry I'm Not Sorry" are just a few of my favorite jams.
Paint (Jon Cozart)
In addition to some incredibly well edited comedy vlogs, Jon Cozart's channel features all of those parody songs that you loved in middle school like "After Ever After" and "Harry Potter in 99 Seconds." Now, he continues to create iconic musical parodies but with a bit more bite. See: "Politiclash" and "YouTube Culture".
SERIES
Cereal Time
Cereal Time is a morning show hosted by Charlie McDonnell (a.k.a. my first ever YouTube fave) and Jimmy Hill. Released every weekday, it includes miscellaneous quiz games, pop culture discussions and all-around happiness. Cereal is optional for additional enjoyment.
Superfruit
Hosted by Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying of Pentatonix, this self-proclaimed "Best Show on the Internet" not only doles out great music and lifestyle recommendations, it's also SuperFun (el oh el). And y'know, they sometimes sing every now and then.
CineMash
If you enjoy series like "Honest Trailers" by Screen Junkies (see below), then you'll enjoy this channel that remixes movie trailers into the stylings of other genres.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
I gave a 10 minute presentation on this show in my 11th grade high school English class. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or space here to give you that whole presentation all over again, so I'll just pitch you this: modern day, real-time "Pride and Prejudice" on the Internet. It's wonderful.
ESSAYS AND CRITICISM
Nerdwriter1
Featuring video essays on topics ranging from beached whales to Donald Trump, the nerdwriter's videos are both addictive and educational. Here's one of my favorites on the subject of intertextuality in film.
Wisecrack
Wisecrack surely lives up to its banner's slogan: "Laugh harder, grow smarter." This channel features multiple video essay series that mix comedy and pop culture with the likes of philosophy and literary analysis.
Screen Junkies
You may be familiar with Screen Junkies' "Honest Trailers" series, which takes a critical yet humorous look at popular films. More generally, however, Screen Junkies features a lot of fair and fun discussions about movies, so if you're a fan of film criticism, I highly recommend them!
CassJayTuck (Cassidy Sharples)
If you like books, and if you like YouTube, then there are plenty of creators who marry both of those concepts into "BookTube." My personal favorite BookTuber is Cassidy Sharples, otherwise known as CassJayTuck. She's funny, fair, opinionated, and passionate.
VLOGGERS
Savannah Brown
You may have seen some of Savannah Brown's slam poetry around the Internet, particularly her response to "What Boys Look For in Girls". I had trouble placing her in a category because she really defies categorization. She sings, writes, vlogs and advocates. In short, she's just really cool.
SoundProofLiz (Lizzy Jones) and JamesChats
I'm recommending these two channels as a pair because Lizzy and James just so happen to be dating and they're wonderful both together and apart. Based in LA, they're avid cosplayers, DisneyBounders and all-around cutie pies.
ItsWayPastMyBedtime (Carrie Hope Fletcher)
This is one of my absolute favorite YouTubers for a long, long time. Besides being a star of London's West End and a bestselling author, Carrie Hope Fletcher is just incredibly creative, talented and sweet. Her videos just make me happy.
You probably won't be surprised to find out that these channels only make up a third of the channels that I follow, so if you're looking for any more recommendations, I'll gladly give them. Happy watching!
