Here are the things that the internet had no chill about in 2015. They went viral, became memes or were generally just topics that were discussed at length in the year 2015. Its been an eventful year to say the least!
1. The dress
The dress, also known as Dressgate and associated with the hashtags #thedress, #whiteandgold, and #blackandblue, is a viral photo and meme which became popular in February 2015. The meme originated from Tumblr. A flood of arguments poured in over whether the dress pictured was blue and black, or white and gold. In just the first week after the surfacing of the image alone, more than 10 million tweets mentioned the dress. It was later discovered that the dress was originally blue. Members of the fields of neuroscience and color vision classify the photograph as an optical illusion.
2. Zayn Malik quits One Direction
In March of 2015, Zayn Malik announced that he was leaving the boy band One Direction after five years. The internet exploded, with millions of fans left stunned and heartbroken over his departure.
3. Caitlyn Jenner
The world was stunned when the American Olympian, step father to the Kardashian sisters, and father of Kendall and Kylie Jenner announced that he had transitioned into a woman. Caitlyn Jenner, formally known as Bruce Jenner, received support and criticism from social media.
4. John Cena
Unexpected John Cena , also known as “And His Name is John Cena” is a video clip that loudly introduces WWE wrestler John Cena as his intro music plays. Initially, the short clip is often edited onto the end of a video or Vine either to produce a jumpscare or humorous effect.
5. A new royal baby
On May 2nd, the world welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s second child. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge demoted her uncle Harry to fifth in line to the throne. Because of the changes to succession law effected in 2015, she cannot be displaced in the line of succession by any younger brothers. Twitter recorded more than a million tweets mentioning the birth of the baby princess, while “royal baby” was the most searched for term on Google all day.
6. Riley Curry
Steph Curry, the star of the Golden State Warriors and the best-shooting player in basketball, is the most exciting athlete of the year. And the most delightful thing about Steph Curry? His adorably strong-willed daughter, 3-year-old Riley, the star of every press conference she attends. Social media quickly started memes of the adorable 3-year old.
7. NASA Finds Liquid Water on Mars
In September, NASA discovered water on Mars. Social media users took to Twitter to poke fun at the discovery.
8. Chipotle E. Coli outbreak
In early November, an E. Coli outbreak hit Oregon and Washington Chipotle locations. Everyone was astonished by this revelation, since Chipotle is known for using use of locally sourced vegetables and humanely raised animals.
9. Donald Trump
Ever since Trump announced his bid for the Republican nomination, he has been insulting minorities and causing a stir in the media. Not a week seems to go by that Trump isn’t in the news for some form of bigotry
10. Same-Sex marriage legalized
A huge landmark victory took place this summer when Same-Sex marriage was declared legal in all 50 states. The United States Supreme Court ruled in Windsor v. United States that Section 3 of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law that denies legally married same-sex couples over 1,100 protections and responsibilities of marriage, is unconstitutional.

It’s been a hard year for One Direction fans. The departure of Zayn Malik rocked the fan base in early 2015. Tragedy struck again for Directioners in August when it was announced that the band would take a hiatus after five constant years of non-stop touring and recording. Twitter erupted with hilarious memes as One Direction's 'extended hiatus' news sent fans into meltdown.
12. Adele
In late October, Adele released her new single “Hello”. What followed was countless memes that poked fun at how emotional Adele’s new single is.
13. “Why tf You Lyin’?
‘Why TF You Lyin’ is a Vine video of a man named Nicholas Fraser performing a short homemade song about liars in his backyard to the tune of R&B band Next’s song “Too Close”. The video immediately went viral on Vine, leading to many parodies and remixes.
14. Saint West
The second child of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West caused quite a stir online due to his unique name coupled with the fact his parents are immensely famous.
15. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The continuation of the Star Wars series was directed by Star Trek director JJ Abrams. The film saw the return of many Star Wars alums such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Grant, Mark Hamill and the lovable droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is arguably one of the best things that happened this year. However, it inspired death threats galore. Enraged fans threaten those who revealed spoilers, film critics and new anchors who had harsh words to say about the film.
16. Miss Universe
This last event was probably the most cringe worthy thing to ever take place on live television. The internet freaked when Miss Universe host Steve Harvey crowned the wrong Miss Universe. Miss Colombia was only Miss Universe for a little over two minutes before Steve informed viewers of his mistake. Miss Universe 2015 ultimately went to Miss Philippines.
I don't think we will have to wait too long for the next controversy or meme of 2016! In the meantime, we can reflect on all the events of 2k15!
