Dear Confused/Intrigued Reader,
I'm almost positive I'm both a 70-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl trapped inside a 19-year-old's body.
I bet you're thinking, "What in the world is this girl talking about?" or, "Is this some sort of Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Freaky Friday nonsense?" (I wish).
But as simple as it is, I'm 19 years old with quirks of both a grandmother and a tween.
Here I am writing this article at 8 p.m. on a Friday night. Again, I'm 19, and no, I'm not going off to some party or doing college shenanigans and what have you. Instead, I'm spending my Friday night writing, watching "Say Yes to the Dress" and planning to be in bed by 9. Example A of my old-woman-ness, and the list continues:
1. My bedtime (which I assign myself) is 9 p.m. every night.
If I'm not in bed by 10 at the latest, I'm terrified. Now I understand that may be a smidge later for actual 70-year-olds, but hey, most of the kids my age stay up until one every night, so I'd say I'm doing a fairly good job at my grandmotherly duties.
2. I have absolutely everything you could ever need inside my purse.
Tissues? Got them. Hard candies? Got them. Band-aids? Of course. Moms, grandmas, they're always prepared for everything.
3. I bake.
Cookies, brownies, cupcakes, scones, you name it and I'll bake it. I forever just want my friends and family to have happy tummies and be full of sweets because how else should anyone ever live their life?
4. I'm beginning to learn how to knit.
All I've ever wanted in life was to join a knitting circle and knit with others. How both adorable and awesome is that? You get to hang out with wonderful people, and then bam you have a scarf to give as a present.
5. I love sending/receiving mail.
Frequently at school, I'll get cards mailed to me from my grandmother, and it brings me such joy, and I always try my very best to send her something back. We tend to forget about sending mail back and forth to others in this day and age, but it's so much more meaningful than a phone call of some sort.
6. I save everything.
I walk into my grandmother's house, and she has plastic Dunkin' Donuts cups that she's saved and reused. She has old report cards from when my mom was in eighth grade, school pictures of me from kindergarten and everyone in the family's phone number written down in an address book. She's organized to the max and has kept everything that has meant something all these years. And if you have ever seen my room, my closet, my wall, you can tell I'm the same way. I love keeping old ticket stubs, prom invites and graduation packets. If something was special to me at some point, I probably have it saved somewhere.
7. Just play me some Vivaldi or Frank Sinatra and I'll be happy as a clam.
As you can tell, I tend to have an old soul, but don't forget, I also said I'm like a teeny bopper, so bear with me. Honestly, this list could actually go on for days, but I decided to bundle it all up and summarize the main reasons why.
1. Disney Channel.
" High School Musical," "Hannah Montana," "Camp Rock," "Cheetah Girls," "Lizzie Mcguire," "Kim Possible," "Zenon," "Cadet Kelly," essentially everything Disney Channel and everything that could possibly be related in any way shape or form, you've got me. I'm obsessed. I could undoubtedly sing you all the songs from the "HSM" movies, "Hannah Montana" (Miley, Hannah and from the Movie) and every itty bitty bit of "Lizzie Mcguire," including the song in Italian and I know no Italian whatsoever, but hey como e' bella ce' la luna brille e' strette and like this is what dreams are made of, so who cares!
And also, this weekend is the DCOM marathon, so you know I won't be getting out of bed all weekend.
2. Guilty pleasure confession: I sometimes still buy those teeny bopper magazines.
Like J-14 and others because 1. I need to know the deets of who's dating my future husband Nick Jonas and 2. to take those quizzes and find my perfect date.
3. My two favorite movies of ALL time are "The Parent Trap" and "Finding Nemo" (I'm SO excited for "Finding Dory").
You cannot tell me you don't have a crush on Dennis Quaid even to this day regardless of the fact he's 62 now. (My love for him probably falls under my reasons why I'm also 70.) Cue video from the Ellen DeGeneres show of Dennis Quaid going to Starbucks, "Dennis Quaid is Here!" (You must watch if you've never seen it.)
4. I love zoos and aquariums.
And I also beg to leave with some sort of souvenir every time regardless if I go to the same aquarium like five times in a year. Yes,PI do always want to buy the picture they take of you as you walk in where they photoshop a penguin in your hand. Who wouldn't want a penguin in their hand?
5. I will be spending my 21st birthday at Disney World.
While most people my age will be booking trips to Vegas or some tropical island to drink and celebrate, I'll be spending my day with Mickey and Minnie and will probably be wearing a tiara because I will for sure be a princess for a day (and I would give anything to be an actual princess).
6. Taylor Swift is bae.
That's all I really have to say about that because she's perfect in every way, shape and form.
7. I don't swear.
I saw words like hecky and fudge and poop, all things a kid would say essentially.
8. I have a sweet tooth like nobody's business...
So as you can tell, I am quite the individual, but I'm sure we've all been there when we really want to get our beauty sleep at nine instead of midnight or our favorite childhood movie comes on and of course you're going to watch it. But just remember, we all have different sides to our story and to our personalities. Don't ever try to to hide one because it's "uncool" or anything. Like, yes, I would much rather listen to "Nobody's Perfect" or "Getcha Head in the Game" more than something to do with a trap queen because I honestly still don't know what that means whatsoever, and I would much rather drink a cup of tea and curl up with a good book than go out and party until two a.m. I just live a different kind of life than most, but I'm OK with that.
