Finally, it's winter break, when we get the chance to truly relax without having anything to worry about. Unlike Thanksgiving, when college students still have final tests and projects looming on the horizon, winter break gives us a chance to take a few weeks to do whatever we want. Although having no obligations feels like a great opportunity for us to do absolutely nothing (i.e. watch Netflix for hours in bed) I also think that having a break is an opportunity to, be productive with our free time. Of course, binge watching your favorite show is definitely recommended, but here are some other ways you can spend your break.
1. Read a book.
Yes, for fun. It doesn't have to be anything scholarly, just something you'd pick up and enjoy. During college we rarely get to read books of our own choosing, so it's kind of nice to dive into something that's an easier read.
2. Make dinner.
You'll shock your family and give the cook in your house a nice break. Plus, having a few recipes up your sleeve is great knowledge to have as you transition from college student to adult.
3. Exercise.
I don't get to work out as much as I'd like while I'm at school. Winter break is a great chance to get yourself in better shape, so you'll be looking and feeling your best when it's time to head back to school.
4. Spend more time outdoors.
After a finals week spent in the library, it's important to get out of the house and into the fresh air. Whether you're heading toward a warmer or colder climate for break, there's plenty to do outside, like going to the beach or going for a hike.
5. Find a part-time job.
The holidays are a great time to make a little extra cash. It's not as relaxing as hanging out at home, but since you have the time, you may thank yourself for the money when you head back to school.
6. Offer to clean.
Your parents have spent years doing your laundry and cleaning up after you. So surprise them by offering to vacuum the house before guests arrive and do the dishes after meals.
7. Eat healthier.
Another thing we don't do enough of at college. Cherish the delicious, unprocessed meals you can get while at home. Break is a great time to get yourself healthy and be kind to your body. Enjoy the few weeks of endless good food before you are tempted by the convenience of Chick-fil-A when you go back to school.
8. Clean out your room.
I've moved enough times that I don't have much old stuff to get rid of, but if you've lived in the same house your whole life, I'm sure you have tons of toys and clothing you can donate -- plus, this is the perfect time of year to give back.
9. Explore new places in your hometown.
You never know what you might find. Although I'm going home to Nashville, which is entirely new to me, I'm sure there may be different restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, or parks that you haven't visited before in your hometown. Take some time to enjoy what you find.
10. Meet up with an old friend.
They may go to a different college, but getting together with someone you haven't seen in a while brings back great memories and can be really fun.
11. Spend time with family as much as you can.
This is what the season is really about. Yes, you will probably get tired of them at some point, and will be ready to go back to school. But enjoy the moments you have with the people you love, because you'll miss them soon enough.
