When you live in such close proximity to other people it is almost impossible not to get sick. During this Halloween weekend I was blessed with being sick right after my roommate got better. So I thought about all of the things that happen when you’re in college and sick.

1. You act like nothing is wrong

Going through the day from class to class hoping that this isn’t reality and hoping that you aren’t actually sick, it’s just the weather.

2. You admit the problem

After all day, you realize that you are sick and if it’s the weekend, your entire weekend is filled with nothing because you can’t do anything fun when you’re sick.

3. Call mom

Now that you admit you’re sick, you have to call your mom to find out what you should do. You ask her what kind of medicine you should get after giving her your symptoms and she diagnosis you.

4. Go to the nearest pharmacy

As a Mercyhurst student, you take a quick walk to CVS and buy the cheapest brand of the medicine your mom told you to get.

5. Complain

Now it is time to complain that you can’t believe you’re sick. Complain about how slow it is taking for the medicine to work and how your weekend is ruined.

6. Sleep

Since you’re sick and have nothing better to do, you might as well let your body try and fight off the illness itself by sleeping. Hopefully this will get you to feel better quicker

7. Eat chicken noodle soup

Although it won’t be anything like your mom makes, Campbell’s or the cafeteria’s will do just fine. According to my mom, it has “restoring properties” and it tastes good.

8. Watch a movie/Netflix

Now that you have taken a nap and eaten, you might as well watch a movie or a show on Netflix because there is nothing else to do.

9. Take the nest dose

Don’t forget to take your medicine as directed. Skipping a dose can cause you to feel worse and then it won’t work properly.

10. Get a good night’s sleep

Might as well get as much sleep as you can. Remember to use Vick’s vapor rub because that stuff is the key to sleeping.

11. Repeat steps 5 – 10 until better

Keep doing these steps until you feel better and if you have to go to class, don’t force yourself unless completely necessary, no one wants to catch whatever you have.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
