In 776 BC, the first Olympic Games played in Ancient Greece honored Zeus. Today the Olympics are a global sensation in which the most talented athletes compete for personal victory and national glory. The events include popular sports (at least in the US) such as gymnastics and swimming to less publicized (but still challenging) sports such as judo and handball. Throughout the years, the event listing has altered. The Olympics commission added golf, rugby and kitesurfing to the Rio 2016 games. The Tokyo 2020 games will debut surfing, softball, baseball, surfing, skateboarding and sports climbing. Amidst the addition of new events, sports—both obscure and intriguing—have been eliminated from the games. Discontinued events include:
1. Tug of War
2. Live Pigeon Shooting

Poor little feathered friends.
3. Solo Synchronized SwimmingContradiction much?
4. Croquet

The first Olympic sport played by women in the 1900 Paris Games. Unfortunately, it was shortly discontinued because only one team signed up and just one fan came to support.
5. Dueling Pistols
Contrary to the name, contestants did not face off in a Western-like shoot off but rather shot a dummy.
6. Horse Long Jump
7. Distance Plunging
A contest that tested how far one could dive and then hold their position for 60 seconds.
8. Lacrosse
9. Jeu de Paume
Basically indoor tennis.
10. Polo
11. Art Contest
