Ah, the life as a female sports fan. Sports are nothing new to me, after all, I've grown up around two brothers, a former high school and college football playing dad, and a stellar volleyball and softball star of a mom. On weeknights, baseball would grace our television screen and on weekends, it was college football and NFL games all day long. I'm not ashamed to sport (Ha, get it?) my sports knowledge, and I've come across my fair share of humans who are either impressed, bothered or confused about this plethora of sport information and willingness to learn more about other sports. So, here I am gracing you with 11 confessions us female sports fans would love the world to know.
1. The look guys give you when you actually know what you're talking about is more than priceless.
I wouldn't sit and try to BS you with sports knowledge if I had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Don't seem so shocked that I keep up with stats and sports news, but be grateful you're interacting with someone who appreciates your interests as well.
2. Yes, I know how to read the damn scoreboard.
Runs, hits, errors, ERA, innings, batting average. I got it. First downs, time left in the quarter, timeouts for each team. Yes, I'm aware. Penalty time, period number, goals scored. Sweet, I understand. Red cards, yellow cards, fouls against each player. Any more questions?
3. I get the rules too, and if I ask you a question, then I want to learn, I'm not stupid.
If you quiz me on sports terminology and sport rules, then I will certainly pass. If I ask a question, then know I'm not asking out of stupidity, but because I want to learn and understand the game as holistically as I can, simply because I love to learn about sports.
4. Every other girl will try and look cute, I just want to wear a jersey, drink some beer, and enjoy the game.
There's nothing more relaxing than putting your feet up at a sport game and just taking it all in. No need to wear a sundress and cute wedges to a sporting event- there's a time and place for that. I'll just sit with a beer in hand and my favorite jersey on and enjoy the game, silently mocking those who are seeking attention.
5. There is more excitement shopping in a sporting goods store than any female clothing store in the mall.
Modells restocked on my favorite team gear? New soccer equipment? Weights and resistance bands? Come get me in a few hours. Beats dress shopping any day.
6. I can pass your "sports knowledge authenticity test." Don't worry.
I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were the grand master of all sports knowledge. Hit me with another question, I dare you.
7. I'm not here to just look at boys, I promise you.
Yeah, the boys look cute in their uniforms, but that's just a bonus. I'm here for the game itself.
8. I seldom read any other section of the paper besides the sports.
Local, world news and business sections are always tossed to the side. All I need in this life of sin is the sports section.
9. I've watched more hours of Sports Center than I have any girly reality TV show.
I turned town a TV subscription solely because the package did not come with ESPN. Does that tell you anything? Sports Center is my go to, and I have certainly watched more hours of any ESPN program than I have "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette."
10. And sport movies are our favorites, hands down.
"The Sandlot," "Hoosiers," "Miracle," "We Are Marshall," "Rudy," "Remember the Titans," "Trouble With The Curve," "Radio," "Any Given Sunday," "42," "Gracie," "Rocky." You name it, we've watched it -- over and over and over again.
11. If you took us she-fans on a sporty date, we would not complain.
Hey, hint, hint! No need to spend money on a date you won't even enjoy; take us along to your favorite sporting event and we'll enjoy every minute. No question about it.
So there you have it, a glimpse into the minds of us female sports fans. Hope you appreciate where our mind and heart is at and understand that we love the game just as much as you do.
