10 Ways To Stand Out At Greek Life Recruitment

It's that time of year! Sororities and fraternities are preparing to get new members to include in their organization. We have been preparing all semester to meet all of you and we could not be more excited! Being nervous is completely normal! Here are 25 ways to stand out at recruitment!

1. Smile!

Be sure to smile! We know this can be nerve-wracking, believe us, we've been through this as well! But smile that amazing smile, because when you do, we will notice!

2. Be engaged!

Listen to the presentations and participate in icebreakers! You'll get more out of recruitment if you're directly involved in it. This week is about deciding if you want this lifelong sisterhood/brotherhood, so pay attention to the conversations because they are for you!

3. Ask questions!

Asking questions shows us that you are interested in the organization. Ask about our philanthropies, our events, and even our history! Recruitment week is the time to ask questions about Greek Life!

4. Breathe!

Keep breathing. We know this can be overwhelming, with all the potential new members going through recruitment, as well as active members of the organization in the room. It can be intimidating, but we want to meet you! We are so excited to meet you, so breathe! You'll be okay!

5. Show interest in leadership!

Organizations like Greek Life may be lifelong, but after we graduate, we must find new leaders to keep the chapter going! We're looking for future leaders to carry on the legacy.

6. Don't answer with one word responses!

This is the first negative tip, but it's really important. We're trying to get to know you and envision you being our brother/sister. Please give us more than "yes" or "no"! We want these conversations to flow naturally, so elaborate!

7. Share a story!

Share a story from your life! Tell us something you did with your sibling, an achievement in your life, or a place you've been to! These will help us remember you and you can even find a member who has something in common with you!

8. Embrace the open ritual!

Many recruitments, especially sorority recruitment, hold a night where we invite members to an open ritual. Take this night in, embrace it, and remember it! This is the first night where you can really envision yourself in the organization, and we are revealing part of our secrets to you. So please, remember it and really enjoy it. We know we will.

9. Don't be afraid to share your passions!

We're really passionate about our organization, but share what you're passionate about! Love television? Obsessed with a type of food? Tell us! If we see you're passionate about things in your life, we can see that you can be passionate about our organization! It lets us know more about you and we'll remember your passions!

10. Be yourself!

This one is the most important. Be your true, amazing, and genuine self. If you're going to join an organization like this, which is lifelong and has a huge commitment, being yourself is important. We want to get to know you, and we know this whole process is nerve-wracking. But just know that this is a safe space to be yourself and know that you will be okay!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
