My love for musical theatre is so real these days. Every day I seem to find a new thing that I love about it. I learn something new every day about the field, and the obsession is at an all time high. If you’re a theatre kid, you may feel the same way. Here are 10 ways you know theatre is your life.
1. First things first: “theatre” not “theater.”
You know theatre is your life if you get annoyed when people refer to the holy ground where you perform as a theater.
2. You musically quote everything.
Quoting a musical is a daily habit. While some people quote movies or pop songs, you break out into song and dance after hearing one word from your favorite musical.
3. You feel more at home on the stage than you do at your house.
You may relax more at home, but there’s a special peace that comes when you stand on a stage and the spotlight hits you. It’s indescribable.
4. Mic tape residue is found on your face after every show.
You wake up the morning after a show to find sticky gunk straggling on your face from the tape you plastered to your face the night before. Totally normal.
5. The Tony’s are of equal or greater value to the Super Bowl or any sports championship.
You haven’t missed a Tony’s award ceremony in years, and if we’re being honest, you still have last year’s ceremony on your DVR. It’s inspiring, what can I say?
6. Rehearsal/theatre over everything.
ROE. TOE. Whatever you wanna call it, it’s real. There are very few things in this life that would become more important than being at rehearsal.
7. Stage makeup.
Wearing your full stage makeup to dinner after the show is a completely normal thing. In fact, you like to consider it a form of advertisement if you will.
8. The posting of the cast list.
When that cast list is posted, it’s like you were just drafted into the NBA or the NFL. It’s a big deal, and personally, I think it should be publicized.
9. “Thank you places.”
The call for places still gets to you. The nerves that kick in, the sudden love you feel for everyone in the cast. Finally, all of your hard work is about to pay off. You get to perform.
10. There is actually nothing else you would rather do.
While your friends are playing sports, studying and working, you always seem to find yourself in the theatre. You can’t stay away. It’s truly addicting.
We’ve all heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason. Well, for me and for many of you, the theatre was introduced to us for a reason. It is constantly teaching us something about ourselves, about others and about the world around us. It’s extremely hard work and your friends rarely understand the music you listen to, but that’s what makes it so special. The theatre has its own meaning for everyone — for you, it just means more. It’s your home, and there’s no place like home.
