10 Technology Use Alternatives

Ditching technology every once in a while can actually be a relief.

Technology is a huge part of our daily lives. It does a lot to make our lives easier and keeps any information we want at our fingertips, but it can also be overwhelming. Even while we don't mean it, it isn't uncommon for someone to go less than an hour without using some sort of technology, especially a cell phone. We are always on social media or watching television or searching the web for nothing in particular. There are definitely times where we are actually using technology to achieve some practical goal or figure something out, but probably more where we use it to pass the time and we get dependent. Maybe it's just me, but when I give myself technology breaks or "unplug", I feel like I'm not being tied down by anything or anyone or filling my head with useless information and I actually have time to actively do things. Either way, here are a few alternatives to technology:

1. Read a book. Classic suggestion that all parents (and me) give.

2. Cook/bake something new. No matter how good Krabby Patties look on TV, you can't actually eat them.

3. Go to the beach. Where you lay in the sun or play in the water, but stay off your phone.

4. Exercise. Trust me, I know, watching Netflix on the couch is great, but the endorphin rush during and after exercise is pretty nice too.

5. Go for a drive. Clear your head, blast music, find new places.

6. Learn something new. Or, rather, have someone teach you something. I'm always bugging my dad with random questions about cars, just because I think it's fun to know things, no matter how random.

7. Work in the yard. Not my cup of tea, but if you like it, or you've never done any kind of yard work, try it out.

8. Go to a museum/zoo/park. Yes, it might cost money, but it could also be fun.

9. Go on a scavenger hunt/adventure. My friend and I recently decided to drive around all morning trying donuts from any new donut places we happened upon.

10. Make something. Draw, sculpt, paint, make a dream catcher, knit, anything. You might find yourself a new hobby.

If you do anything for an extended time without technology, especially if it's with other people, when you do use technology again, you'll wonder why you were ever using it so much in the first place. Which reminds me of a #11. Talk. If you're spending time with someone, don't be on your phone during a conversation, it's amazing how much easier conversation flows without distractions.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
