Do you ever listen to a song and suddenly feel as though you're sucked into the opening scene of a cheesy rom-com from 2004? I've compiled a list of songs that bring me into my own personal early 2000s chick flick, and you're sure to feel the same way as soon as they start playing through your ear buds.
1. "In Too Deep" by Sum 41
I particularly love listening to this song as I'm walking across the quad on my way to class. When this iconic intro starts to play, "In Too Deep" brings me back to the "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" days of Hilary Duff and her coolest haircut ever.
2. "The Revolution" by The Veronicas
Like pretty much any song by The Veronicas, "The Revolution" automatically makes you feel kick-ass, and like you can totally take down Rachel Witchburn in the Student Government election. Total "Sydney White" vibes, anyone?
3. "(There's Gotta be) More to Life" by Stacie Orrico
Okay, so while this song is really only featured in "Robots", (which is totally not a chick flick at all), Stacie makes me feel like there really has got to be more to life than chasing down every temporary high. I feel like hopping in my friends' hot pink convertible Mercedes with the top down, screaming the words loud and proud every time I hear it.
4. "Supergirl" by Krystal Harris
Okay, so first of all, who has a more early 2000s name than Krystal with a "K"? How iconic? We all feel very Princess Mia when we hear "Supergirl", and that's including men. We could all discover that we're secretly the heir to some weirdly named country... right? (Or we can at least all hope for an eyebrow transformation like hers!)
5. "Perfect Day" by Hoku
You can quote me on this, but "Perfect Day" is the most inspirational song to get you through your day. You can get your law degree and prove all of the sexist, misogynistic men in your life wrong when this song plays! And you can also graduate with a pink cap and gown. Anything is possible when you listen to Hoku.
6. "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton"
This is such a classic girlfriend song to jam to. We all channel our inner "White Chick" when Vanessa Carlton plays, even if we are neither white nor a chick. And we all rock it. I have weird urges to roll down the street on a piano and I have no shame about that.
7. "The Anthem" - Good Charlotte
I am totally an early 2000s high school student whenever this absolute gem comes on. Suddenly I'm wearing a necktie as a belt on my awesome camo cargo pants, I've got zebra-striped highlights, and I've got a too-cool-for-school attitude. And if my life were a movie, this song would play while Vin Diesel became my babysitter.
8. "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer
This song is an oldie but a goody. We all have cool flashbacks of Dawson, Joey, Jen and Pacey from Season 2 of "Dawson's Creek", and fawn over the idea of Freddy Prince Jr. kissing us, the mere underdog, like in "She's All That". "Kiss Me" makes me want to swing on a swing with a flower crown and lay in a field with a really cute boy with frosted tips.
9. "That's What Girls Do" by No Secrets
After listening to this song, I'm so ready to come up with a cool secret handshake with my popular BFF that may or may not go something like, "Boys are cheats and liars, they're such a big disgrace!", ("Hot Chick:, anyone?). I don't care how old I am, when No Secrets comes on, I will jump around my room like a 13-year-old watching "The Cheetah Girls".
10. "Spinnin' Around" by Jump 5
This is a total guilty pleasure of mine, and it probably wasn't even featured in a movie. In the "movie" that is my life, this would be in the end credits and I would be jumping on a trampoline and loving life.
