It is almost the end of October. The leaves a changing color, the air is getting colder, and that means we are only a few weeks away from the annual Cortaca Jug Game. An annual tradition every student looks forward to at SUNY Cortland. This is one tradition that we all agree is timeless.
Spanning all the way back to the 1930's, the rivalry between the two schools was once a friendly one and over time has become something where the two schools can't stand each other. Honestly I just love a high energy football game and could care less about why everyone hates Ithaca, but the Cortaca Jug game delivers on that... every single year.
Last year we even made it on Sportscenter for an insane botched play that ended up going for a touchdown pass...from the long snapper. The the year before that we rioted in the streets because we won on the final play of the game. So with that said, let's make 10 insanely bold predictions for what will occur at this year's Cortaca Game.
1. Cortland will score 21 unanswered points in the first half
Let's just take a look at the stats for a second. Cortland has won every Cortaca game since 2010, and while the scores have been close... WE'VE BEEN WINNING EVERY YEAR SINCE 2010. With the success the football team is already experiencing at 6-1, I say they blow them out of the water in the first half this year. The mercy rule will be in affect after this years beat down on Ithaca Bombers.
2. Cortland's quarterback will throw five touchdown passes for over 300 yards
To some this seems really, really, really bold, but if you look at the quarterback's stats this year he's thrown for over 300 yards three times already and has 20 touchdowns to one interception this year. He's balling out right now like a champion and even making Deion Sanders call him prime time. This is the one player to watch out for during the Cortaca game and I think he will not disappoint.
3. Ithaca will only score three points
I don't know if Ithaca is actually a good team this year, but I know we're really good this year... so I'm gonna say we stop them completely. Cortland will continue it's supremacy in this rivalry and continue to rack up the wins for the decade. Sorry Ithaca the Bombers will get torched by the Red Dragons.
4. Blaze will dance to Drake's Hotline Bling during the halftime show
I just really want to see Blaze practice Drake's sweet cha cha moves during the halftime show. Plus I'm sure the crowd will love it, that song get's the people going... but really I just want to see Blaze do his best Drizzy impersonation.
5. President Bitterbaum will give the most inspiring halftime speech of all time to the team
Ahhhh look at him, the man, the legend, the Bitterbaum. President Bitterbaum is known for his inspiring speeches, so why not give one to the people who need it most during Cortaca. Forget the head coach, Bitterbaum will have these guys more fired up then coach Bombay did in the Mighty Ducks.
6. Both dinning halls on campus will see the most customers they've had in weeks
Yah, yah I know everyone loves to hate the food in the dinning halls. Well I believe during Cortaca more people than ever this year, will for some odd reason have the need to eat... a lot of food. The proud supporters of student athletics are gonna need some fuel to cheer on the team. I feel sorry for those who work there on that day, including myself.
7. The Cortaca Jug Concert will be sold out
Most years when the school throws these concerts people just don't want to go because it's some artist most people have never heard of, except spring fling those concerts are awesome. With that being said Echosmith has a lot of students fired up and I think this concert will be a doozie in terms of attendance.
8. People will still go to the game even though it's in Ithaca
As much as we dislike Ithaca college and the town, people will still go to the game to support the team. School spirit is alive and well during the Cortaca game which means more than enough people will go to the game instead of stick around Cortland...hopefully.
9. Cortaca's 2013 riot will repeat this year
Oh boy, the harsh reality of the Cortaca game not being in Cortland. The reason the Cortaca riots happened in 2013 was because it was an away game... there was nothing stopping students from continuing to party. While there may be more police than in the past, nobody is ready for an non stop party with some of the craziest sports fans in the SUNY school system. This ones gonna be legen...wait for it... dary.
10. Or people will be responsible for Cortaca
Maybe I'm wrong and people are going to be responsible during a day that has become one dedicated to partying. There is hope and hope is all you can have, because either way, all people want to do is have fun on Cortaca. Just don't make dumb decisions and hurl beer cans at police officers, that's how you get arrested my friends.
