Americans love obsessing over certain things!

Year In Review: The Most Overrated Aspects Of 2016

Another year is coming to a close. 2016 brought us good times, bad times, and of course, memes, television shows, and products for us to obsess over. A lot America's obsessions from 2016 seem to be a little overrated, at least in my opinion. I understand, however, that the things I am about to mention have either a large following/fanbase and some people truly do love them. I'm not taking that away from those people (to each their own), as I am just expressing my thoughts on what I believe to be the Most Overrated Aspects of 2016.

"Stranger Things"

This Netflix series had a very large impact on subscribers this year and has left viewers anticipating the upcoming second season. With all of the talk and commotion, I figured that I had to give the show a shot. I watched the first episode, and I kept thinking to myself, "When is it going to get good?" The pilot episode left me unamused, and I failed to finish the series. I expected it to be much better with all of the hype, but it barely grabbed my attention. I may try again during the next snow day...

" Hamilton"

The numbers in my bank account clearly portray that I would never be able to get tickets to this show. I'm sure that it is great if you're into theater, and the arts and whatever the show is about (I'm actually not even sure of the plot). Also, I can see a great show at the movies for just $5.50 on discount Tuesdays instead of paying thousands of dollars for something I'm not interested in.

Chewbacca Mom

I've never seen any of the Star Wars films, so I guess if I have then I would have found this viral video entertaining. However, I could not have been less amused. I am happy that this mother is getting her five minutes of fame and appearing on all of the late-night talk shows, but it is clear that her and I have a different sense of humor.

Star Shower Projectors

It seems like almost everyone in the neighborhood is now an owner of these crazy contraptions that are advertised as taking the place of Christmas lights. Unfortunately, they don't come close to them. I understand if you're gonna use this device in addition to actual Christmas lights (or just chose to put nothing up at all), but just using the Star Shower on your house by itself comes off as a little tacky.

"Pokémon Go"

Yes, the idea and implementation is very cool. This year, we all finally became Pokémon masters which most of us wanted to become since we were kids. However, there's a problem when you go down to the neighborhood boardwalk and have to push past hundreds of children, teens, and adults who are all staring at their phones while trying to catch virtual creatures.

Dabbing

Call me grandpa, but I don't understand this. Is it a dance? Are you sneezing? Is it a mating call? A voodoo ritual? I just want to take a nice group picture without someone doing this for their personal amusement.

Rob & Chyna

Who gave these two fools their own show this year?! It's bad enough we have to see the Kardashian sisters once a week, but now it's even worse that we have to see their in-the-shadows brother running around with a girl just looking to get the Kardashian name.

Anything Involving the Election

Obviously, this years' election was very crucial to the future of our country. However, this particular election made a mockery of our political system, and it is one thing that I will not miss about 2016. We weren't able to change the channel without hearing about Hillary's e-mails or Trump groping women. This was barely an election. It was more like a new season of MTV's reality show "The Challenge: Rivals".

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
