Why Write About Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health.

Why Write About Mental Health

There are many articles I write that revolve around the same topic; mental health. Some may question why I tend to write about the same thing. When I first started writing for the Odyssey I honestly did not know what to write about. There are so many controversies and current events to talk about, but honestly they may be things that everyone talks about like politics or what is going on in the world today.

Nowadays it seems like mental health gets pushed under the rug or not really taken seriously until something bad happens. I normally write about what some may label as depressing and gloomy. What I write about is realistic. I write about mental health simply because not a lot of people do. Not downing anyone else's writing, but I am speaking for myself. When you are a mental health victim, it because important to write or speak out reoccurring feelings and problems. It is a form of venting and could be relatable to others.

Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and many more mental illnesses are real issues people have to deal with on a daily basis. To cover everything up and be blinded by the realism, we tend to make up scenarios and create fairytales to get away from reality. Not only is this important to those who are dealing with this everyday, but it is important to those who are considered "normal."

I write about mental health because just like everyone else, I go through my own struggles. My struggles and what I have been through can benefit someone else. What I mean by that is when I write about a situation it can help someone else.

Going through my journey and having my bad days to where I just don't want to get out of bed, it's great and beneficial to get advice and know that other people go through the same thing. Honestly if someone gets offended of gets annoyed because I am being repetitive, I don't care. What may cause you to be uninterested in what I write about may cause someone to talk to someone about the suicidal thoughts they are having.

I am a warrior and my battle scars just show what I have been through. To whoever goes through the same thing as me, stay strong and do not let your illness define you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
